Nice painting, but do you think it is realistic?

No, Joe.

It doesn't look very realistic at all.

The seas aren't quite right - the hatches are just plain silly, the warps
don't make any sense at all, and the skipper looks like he has a bad
attitude and huge feet!

Is this a painting of Alien?

The boat looks old, and there are no electronics aboard..... I think that it
might be Alien.

There aren't any pretty women aboard. I bet $10 that I can name that boat.

Eight bells is a good one. I also like Saved and Fog warning and wrecked schooner.

This picture made me stop dead in my tracks.

The seas are innacurate - the boat isn't quite right - and yet the picture
really affects me.

I cannot answer your question.
I wish that I could appreciate art, but I cannot. Many years ago, I visited
the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. My wife cried while she looked at one
painting. I was only able to understand her reaction because music often
does the same thing to me.

It seems to me that you can.

Appreciating art isn't about 'understanding' it, or analysing, or
intellectualising, but about being affected by it - having a reaction, being
drawn into it. Good art grabs you by the boo-boo. Whether or not a piece of
art is 'good' has more to do with the person experiencing it, than any
intrinsic quality of the artwork itself. "That's a good painting" is,
generally speaking, a metaphor for "I like that painting".

Depends on who's speaking. While I agree that the reaction to a gien
piece of art is the important thing about it, there is a lot to know
about any field of art such as painting for example.

It is quite possible, given some education on the technical aspects, to
look at a painting and say, "That's a good painting but I just don't
like it." Same for music.
