Note on planing the portabote with a 5 hp. The transom mounting is not
quite stiff enough and will allow the engine leg to move forward and
contact the back lip of the hull, resulting in degraded steering
ability. The solution is to use the tilt adjustment at its most
extreme angle and move your weight forward.
BTW, had 600lbs incl engine in my 10' portabote this weekend chugging
around Oyster Bay, No speed records, but no problems either. Smooth,
comfortable and dry.

Bob... you need a 9.9hp to achieve plane.

Unless he buys the much superior, stronger, faster, lighter, half the price,
Portabote, in which case he can plane with just himself aboard using an electric
trolling motor. To plane with a passenger and gear, he would need 5 hp.

I'm think the 12 would work good for us...we're 3 now!
