Thanks for the input though. I wasn't looking to start a flamewar with this
topic, and I had already done my own research and formed my own opinions, I
just wanted to know how some of you interpreted the available evidence.

Big difference between the mass of a building and a skinny little ally
mast.
Lighting conductors on buildings are thick, wide straps of copper, a
far cry from the cables or strips that boats use.
Can't remember ever seeing a lightning protected yacht that didn't
suffer extensive damage from a direct strike.

For my money..why go looking for it.

The idea is to provide an alternative, low resistance path to ground.
The concept is proven to work well on buildings, why not on sailboats?

Yeah, but the results show that if you stick a lightning rod up into a
thunderstorm, it is very likely that you will find lightning.

How many folks have lightning "proofed" their boat?
Did you make your own modifications or buy a package? What

better than others?
Have you ever been hit?

No such thing as lightning protection, just attraction.

For some, this proved to be a mental stress test. Jaxie collapsed on the

and Scotty, a big p.s. to set the record straight right here, as

you seem
to have made a small, understandable but incorrect assumption.

I've never
claimed to be an engineer in anything. I said I studied at one of

the best
Engineering schools in the country, and I did. (according to US

News &
World
Reports 2005 "America's Best Colleges" Lehigh is tied with Yale

and
Dartmouth in Engineering. I've had enough science to ace the

teaching
science and technology exams (2 separate certs), but most of what

I know
comes from working so many years as a technician with mechanical

engineering
firms. Before teaching, my job had always been to show engineers

where
they
went wrong. They're not a lot different than high school kids.

yes it is, but it's a very good trade school, and I wouldn't have thought
less of you for sending your son there.
Some of its graduates are every bit as capable as the IT.
Not to bust your bubble or anything, but Stevens IT, while a great school,
is a bit further down the most recent list than #2.
