Strike? You have unions up there? Damn I hate unions!

that's what i'm looking for --thanks
although it sounds a higher than i would have suspected and i'll probably
use a more conservative number : something between a pipe section and a box.
if it looks like it approaches anything critical: i'll dig out the actual
moment of interia

You can use a simple rule of thumb. If you know the moment of intertia
for a box section of the same wall thickness and outside dimensions the
moment of inertial of the tube or ellipse that has the same dimension is
about 14% less.

Hope this gives you what you want.

Cheers

Yeah Unions..... I don't care either way but it's a pain in the ass at
times... like now. Interfering with my work.

Yes that's what I said ealier! What is it with your inability to read?
Anyway, now you know a triangle section isn't _always_ the strongest for
a given amount of material. You must be so happy to have learnt
something new! Hooray!

... But Doug is always right

Nope, I've been wrong several times. But this isn't one of them.

... so we must all be wrong!

Who's "we" kimosabe?

BTW do you know what a cosine is? If you have the slightest clue about
any sort of engineering ... or even high school geometry... then my
diagram should be relatively easy to understand for you...

The compression force on the boom is the cosine of what angle?

No, no, you silly man you need to re-read your posts. It was _you_ who
keeps saying it's a cosine -not me! Are you now realizing that you were
wrong and it's not a cosine after all? You do know what a cosine is
don't you?

Nav August 30th 04 06:26 AM

It's their sophist behaviour that leads to such discussion. Except in
the case of DSK who really thinks most rigid vangs can act like powerful
crane booms. But then what should one expect from a concrete pad pouring
"engineer".

I never claimed impossible..... but I may have utilized poetic license to
present an arguable counter-point.....
My point still being that a topping lift can carry a greater load than a
vang in lifting objects with a boom.

Nav August 30th 04 06:30 AM

Well, compare the numbers for a pipe and box section and you will se my
14% rule of thumb...

Is it still safe to 'supervise' in Canada? Mr. Bush says it's better for the
little guy if you get paid 5/8's while working the 7/12's (as the word
'supervisor' is attached). What a bone head, what an enemy of the working
man..
