OT HORSE COLOR GENETICS

I used to be confused on horse color combinations.
Now I have a headache.

Wow! That brings back memories of a past life.
In 84 - 88 (or so), the president of the vet
school was acting president of Virginia Tech.
During that time, the VT mounted police was
formed. Of course, as soon as the new president
came on the scene, the budget was cut and they
were history.

Used to mystify me, when I was still in the breeding business, the people
who would tell me they chose my stallion because he was chestnut and then
would produce a bay mare...The only people who place much importance on
breeding for color and pattern are the Paint, Appaloosa, and Pinto
people....specific breeds don't have the problem at all: Cleveland Bays had
better be bay or you know something funny's gone on down the genetic line.
The quarter horse people get all wrapped up in producing palominos and
buckskins, but that's playing a whole lot of recessives off each other and
you have to know generations three back to get any degree of accuracy.
Another thing that people don't take into consideration is that the mare
produces 50% of the gene pool, so unless she carries some powerful
recessives, a skanky hipshot, over at the pasterns mare bred to wouldn't
produce a winner, race wise or conformation wise. You have to start with a
good mare and then find a good stallion. You can't improve bloodlines with
bad mares...you're just throwing in a lot of bad recessives. BTW, even
though I am interested in this subject, what does it have to do with
sailing?

I'm still trying to figure out how to fit a horse on my boat.

I need a bigger boat.

This came about because I watched Master and Commander
last night--picked up the DVD. It reminded me of all the
animals fuond on boats. I also picked up Hildago and much
of the movie was about the Spanish horses that became
Mustangs.

I'm still trying to figure out how to fit a horse on my boat.

Did the boat/horse thing for years...got very tiring after awhile, so when
the city people began to migrate out to where we live, I slowly started
selling off the hroses until I was down to my one favorite....boating won
out in the end, though, when I was trting to run a business, show the horse,
and sail....you can onl;y spread yourslef so thing and then something's
gotta give...I still get catalos and magazines and stuff and have to slap
myslef when I start getting teary eyed over horses.....
