Setting the pole low will tend to flatten it from top to bottom. This will reduce the airflow over the top and diminish the drive - stall the sail. It also strikes me that, when running or on a broad reach, the pole could be set forward (obtuse angle between wind direction and pole), so that more of its area is in the shadow of the main. -- Wally www.artbywally.com www.wally.myby.co.uk |

On a run in heavy breeze I would tend to keep the pole close to 45
degrees and fairly low, and to use the barberhaul (sheet-downhaul). This will diminish rolling and keep the spinnaker steady. On a reach, my main consideration would be if the spi is worth the hassle, in most cases not. Apart from that the main consideration would to keep the aft of the sail as open as possible and to adjust the polehight accordingly witch would probably be a bit on the high side.
