Last night I got to spend 5 hours sailing a Herschoff(?)designed
boat
called a Fish or fisher class. Broker wanted it brought here from
across the bay. It's going to be loaded on a truck tomorrow to go to
Chesapeake bay to the new owner. It was a 20 footer fast and nimble.
What a great boat. Arex core glass boat. The previous owner died so

could not find out to much about the boat cept they have been making
that design since 1912. A broker bought this bristol one for 20K and
claims he will get 28K for it in the Cheasapeake area. Anyone know
anymore about the fish class boat?

Tell you what, that boat hugs the water and has the fairest hull of
all.
When Herschoff came up with that one he did it right. Love to have the
same hull just twice as big.

Me too. I haven't sailed a Fish but I've done some racing in the 12
1/2s. They are fun, but very different. Throat halyard tension is the
key to pointing, and a cute little spinnaker that will tangle on the
gaff in a heartbeat.

Many of N.G. Herreshoffs designs had similar hull forms. The "S" boat
(one of my all-time favorites) is a bit slimmer & lighter with a huge
sail. The Newport 29 and the Fisher's Island 32 (which are actually 36
and 42 feet loa IIRC) are very similar in hull & rig. The real deal
would be one of the cold molded modern repros.

This month 'Wooden Boat' magazine has a free Buzzard's Bay 30 (46' LOA)
needing restoration, sitting in a boatyard in Little River SC. If you
really really want one (I'd go get it but my wife would kill me).

Thats a catchy phrase when you say Needs restoring on a wooden boat.
Sometimes its cheaper to start from scratch.
