Last night I got to spend 5 hours sailing a Herschoff(?)designed boat
called a Fish or fisher class. Broker wanted it brought here from across the bay. It's going to be loaded on a truck tomorrow to go to Chesapeake bay to the new owner. It was a 20 footer fast and nimble. What a great boat. Arex core glass boat. The previous owner died so I could not find out to much about the boat cept they have been making that design since 1912. A broker bought this bristol one for 20K and claims he will get 28K for it in the Cheasapeake area. Anyone know anymore about the fish class boat? Thanks Joe |

"Boat Design Quarterly" 14 by Mike O'Brian, has a article about the
Herreshoff Fish-Class (loa 20'9'') from 1916, and Joel Whites centreboard version from 1990-something called the Flatfish. The Fish-class was inspired by the Herreshoff 12½ (loa 16'10'') from 1912. This one was inspired from one or more of the work-boats used for racing in Bermuda. "Buzzard Bay 12½", "Buzzard Bay Boys Boat", "Doughdish" (Fiberglas), "Bullseye" (Marconi) are more or less identical to the 12½. "Thirty Classic Boat Designs" by Roger C Taylor (McGraw-Hill) has a chapter (25) on the 12½. Joel White has also made centreboard versions of both the 12½ called the "Haven 12½". Plans of Joel Whites boats are shown in "Forty Wooden Boats" (Flatfish) "Thirty Wooden Boats" (Haven 12½). Both by Wooden Boat Publications. Peter S/Y Anicula "Joe" skrev i en meddelelse om... IF you want to Google, try: Herreshoff and Fish-class.
I am sure that you can find better links than this: http://www.vsp.cape.com/~whmsi/felicity.htm Peter S/Y Anicula "Joe" skrev i en meddelelse om... Have you ever sailed on one? If I ever buy a waterfront home I'm gonna have to have one tied out back next to RedCloud. Joe "Joe" skrev i en meddelelse om... No, I never sailed one, but I have an interest in boat design.
If you get that waterfront home and the boat, you are very welcome to invite me for a sail. Peter S/Y Anicula "Joe" skrev i en meddelelse om... "Peter S/Y Anicula" wrote in message k... Tell you what, that boat hugs the water and has the fairest hull of all. When Herschoff came up with that one he did it right. Love to have the same hull just twice as big. I haven't sailed a Fish but I've done some racing in the 12 1/2s. They are fun, but very different. Throat halyard tension is the key to pointing, and a cute little spinnaker that will tangle on the gaff in a heartbeat. Herreshoffs designs had similar hull forms. The "S" boat (one of my all-time favorites) is a bit slimmer & lighter with a huge sail. The Newport 29 and the Fisher's Island 32 (which are actually 36 and 42 feet loa IIRC) are very similar in hull & rig. The real deal would be one of the cold molded modern repros. This month 'Wooden Boat' magazine has a free Buzzard's Bay 30 (46' LOA) needing restoration, sitting in a boatyard in Little River SC. If you really really want one (I'd go get it but my wife would kill me). Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

"Joe" wrote Woods not my favorite for hulls. it doesn't rust. Breaks to easy and rots. Swells, shrinks, fastners corrode, ect. I restored an old 1930's Garwood Sweet 16 once, spent a year on it. I like working with metal more than any other boat material. Joe |
