Bart yougotta assign the question number andthe points.
First one: You are out sailing (your own boat) put the rudder over and find out you don't have one. What do you do? Second One: Out of sight of land you find out your GPS, Radar, Radio(s), Sextant, and any other mechanical, electric, or electronicnavigational means (presuming you have them to begin with) quit working. What do you do - first, second, third etc? What do you have to fall back on? How do you navigate to a safe landfall? Third one: What distance do you maintain from a) large freighters or tankers underway and b) government ships underway or anchored/docked? Fourth One: Overseas we have Threat Condition Levels. In the US you all have the color code system. What new system applies to all vessels afloat when did it take effect? That's enuff! Michael |

What kinda emergency rudder system do you have?
Compass is out too . .. all you have is yourself and your skills Don't limit your self to one spot on the globe. The first part applies everywhere, the second applies to US ships only. You aren't, we are. This one is actually humorous to some extent. When we were inspected everyone knew what level we were at but since we didn't know the inspectors particular definition got a black mark in the copy book. I know of three systems so far but there may be more. Try again....... "Nav" wrote in message ... Michael wrote: Bart yougotta assign the question number andthe points. Third one: What distance do you maintain from a) large freighters or tankers underway and b) government ships underway or anchored/docked? This question depends on where they are. In the Panama you don't get alot of choice for example. Fourth One: Overseas we have Threat Condition Levels. In the US you all have the color code system. What new system applies to all vessels afloat when did it take effect? Never heard that one. Are we at war? Cheers |

True about losing all five but I wanted to make it real difficult to arrive
at the actual question, How do you steer and navigate without all the gadgets? Asan aside the businessabout the poles flipping N. for S. had t ready answers. One was, of course, use the N. Arrow for S. and vice versa. Second was most of us on larger ships use gyro compasses and if satellites are functioning GPS compasses. Third is getting back to what I'm looking for . . .how do you steer without a compass and all the other gadgets? "Nav" wrote in message ... Michael wrote: What kinda emergency rudder system do you have? Compass is out too . .. all you have is yourself and your skills Spinnaker pole and predrilled plywood with U bolts. Rope harness for rigging it across the arch supports. We have several magnets on board (even if the compass gets broken it has a magnet too) including the stereo speakers! With that I would magnetize a piece of steel -even one of the emergency hacksaw blades broken in half would do. A compass rose from a chart would do as a rose. But it's very unlikely we would lose all 5 compasses on board. Cheers |

Nutsy,
I think its time you start learning to steer with sail trim. On some of those many quickie sails of your's, Try locking the Rudder in neutral and learn to steer with your sails. You'd be pleasantly surprised at how much control you have and how much speed you can gain. Ole Thom P/S How goes it with Susy? |
