Near Knockdown???
We brought the boat back in really nice winds and picked up some friends at Bayside. Sailing out near the Throgsneck bridge we were really experiencing some odd winds, rapid changes of direction and strong gusts. It was tough to get a proper set and the chop was making things pretty sloppy. Eventually the wind appeared to die down and we sailed behind Fort Totten for a while. The winds had certainly died down and I shook out the reef and popped the genoa all the way. Perfect as we sailed near Execution Rocks 60 minutes later and then....SLAM!!!! A sudden gust of wind pushed Alien over further than ever before. I was standing almost fully on the wall of the cockpit and everyone was hanging on. The wind abated just as suddenly and we popped up. I looked to port and a Catalina 34 or 36 had her mainsail split. A few other boats were getting their wits about them after the shocking gust. I felt bad about the guy with the dead mainsail, but it looked repairable. Back at our slip I heard that a J24 was knocked down as well. It was really a fun sail! Hope you all got out there. RB |

The Catalina 36's are sleaker and very pretty, while the Catalina 34's
are more squared off and boxy looking. It's easy to tell them apart. You will think to yourself, that's a pretty boat and then find out it's a C-36. http://www.catalina36.org/Brochure90_1.jpg http://www.c34.org/images/windy.gif Bobsprit wrote hanging on. Just imagine if this idiot acutally every sailed outside the bathtub like

Not saying much Bob. J24 are notoriously light air boats. Really? J24's are knocked down every day? Oh. RB |
Near Knockdown???
They're not light wind boats here. They sail just like every other boat.
Typical wind speeds here are 20-25kts. They're wet boats but not light wind boats. They like to be sailed flat not heeled. There are dozens of them on the bay on any given day in the summer. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Dave" wrote in message ... Typical wind speeds here are 20-25kts. They're wet boats but not light wind boats. I was thinking the same thing. I don't think they've been considered "light air" boats for a long time. They certainly don't get knocked down easily. I've sailed them with a full main and blade in 25 knots for an exciting ride. Of course it's all relative. When I sail my friends J30, it seems like a light air boat compared to my buddies bristol. RB |

In fact, they capsize quite readily. I've sailed them with a full main and blade in 25 knots for an exciting ride. After showing yourself unwilling to even put a main in 15 knots in your own pictures, the above statement is highly dubious, bub. |

With those powers of deduction, it is no wonder you appreciated M Moore's film. Also, you always say that that j24 that your friend sails won many races, but it does not appear to have belonged to any established fleet. Enlighten us, please. I personally have broached a j24 many times, but don't take my word for it. Try Manhattan Yacht Club: The Sinking of #12 (excerpted from a club newsletter) On Wednesday, July 29, 1998, J/24 #12 was participating in a club race. The wind was from the West at 18 knots. As the race started, a wind storm blew up with gusts of 25-30 knots. Several teams attempted to fly spinnakers, including #12. #12 spun out of control several times. During one broach, her spinnaker filled with water, causing a complete capsize and preventing the boat from righting herself. #12 then went completely turtle. Or from the mouth of Jon Kostecki: "It was 25 knots or so. We recovered; but it was just a little strange. I didn't know it was really possible. I'd capsized J/24s twice before so I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised." |

Hmmm, my ex-girlfriend owned, sailed and raced J24 "Dimples" for 5 seasons on Little Neck Bay and in all conditions. She NEVER broached the boat. Then again, she knew how to sail the boat. Don't stop now, Spirt! You're doing REALLY well!!! Please show us a pic of you sailing a J24. Thanks! RB |

We . . . picked up some friends at Bayside
[Queens, N.Y.] . . . . near the Throgsneck bridge . . . . Where can one do this exactly? Is what used to be known as the Whitestone Marina & Watersports Center sill operating? other? You could pick up people at several small clubs between the bridges. But we usually make pick-ups at the Bayside Marine where we used to keep our Catalina. RB |

We saw Stuff like this, too, but also were bemused by the number of
smaller racing boats (e.g., near Larchmont) that stayed out and seemed to be having a wonderful time. It was a bit challenging, not due to wind strength, but because wind direction changed so often and so strongly. Not a good day for a relaxing sail. Everyone was certainly have a good time for the most part. Of course this wasn't "real" sailing for someone like Mooron! RB |

A pic of your wife is proof enough that a j24 is not tender? It's proof that we sail them. But we all know you know nothing about sailing, so it goes little to support your argument about a J24's stability. You don't. How may times have you been aboard a J24? How about ANY sailboat? Show us a pic. Pic, pic, pic. You cluck like a damn rooster about pics. Try making a case in words. That is where you need the practice the most. she even helped step a mast on a J24 two weeks ago. Well, isn't she Santa's little helper. Bwahahahahahaha! J24's READILY capsize??? Yeah...happens every day! Remember, RB it can only happen if it puts sails up. |

If he raced a J24 for 18 years, I GUARANTEE he spun out, probably a number of times. Your story just doesn't hold together, RB, because as usual, you are lying.
