(excerpted from a club newsletter)

On Wednesday, July 29, 1998, J/24 #12 was participating in a club race. The
wind was from the West at 18 knots. As the race started, a wind storm blew up
with gusts of 25-30 knots. Several teams attempted to fly spinnakers, including
#12. #12 spun out of control several times. During one broach, her spinnaker
filled with water, causing a complete capsize and preventing the boat from
righting herself. #12 then went completely turtle.

"It was 25 knots or so. We recovered; but it was just a little strange. I
didn't know it was really possible. I'd capsized J/24s twice before so I guess
I shouldn't have been too surprised."

Hmmm, my ex-girlfriend owned, sailed and raced J24 "Dimples" for 5 seasons on
Little Neck Bay and in all conditions. She NEVER broached the boat. Then again,
she knew how to sail the boat.

I got bad news for you. The guy who owns trouble has sailed J-Boats for 20
years. He's raced for 18 years. He's crossed the pond 5 times. He hasn't
broached either.
You're not supposed to lose control of the boat.
