Wrong, Bart is correct.

Rubbish! By 1730 the Royal Navy (British that is) routinely fired 21 gun salutes for certain anniversaries.

Cheers

Or just Horvath trying to hoist a flag...and getting it wrong.

If Horvath's on your boat you have every reason to fly the flag upside
down.

Rubbish is certainly right. http://www.snopes.com/military/21gun.htm

The 21 gun salute is not of American origin and predates the American
Revolution. The 1776 thing is just a coincidence, no matter what
misinformation might have been dumped in you email inbox by clueless
people who middlessly forward everything they get without checking to
see if it's true or even plausible.

BONUS QUESTION: What's the proper way to dispose of a flag that has
become old and worn out?

There are a bunch of references to the 21-gun salute being due to the
sum of the digits 1776, I can see where Bart got this info.

However they just don't look quite deeply enough into the matter. For
one thing, the 21-gun salute was not standard in the U.S. military until
about 50 years later... and none of the other countries using the 21-gun
salute have any reason whatever to honor the year 1776.

I found this a rather interesting discussion too. Maybe we can lure some
of these guys to participate here on A.S.A.?

I believe you're supposed to bury it... burning can't be right, since
those assholes in Congress tried but failed to outlaw it.

I would think the reason for our 21 gun salute is whatever
we, as a nation, decide it is.
