Booby, you like to take the "moral high ground" bit its clear you know nothing
of these matters. Its all a big "stunt" to you. Reagan pulled off the biggest
"stunt" in recent American history, I'm surprised he isn't your hero.

The stunt of being a very popular president in spite of his obvious
shortcomings. In fact, he is the most admired president since JFK. Of course,
he is also high on the "least admired" list, but that only contains recent
presidents. It wouldn't surprise me if Reagan was still high on the "admired"
list 50 years from now. Whether he deserves it or not is another question - it
still would be impressive.

Fooling fools like Horvath or Bob Crantz is no special trick and half of the
country is populated with them. It's no surprise that Reagan is loved. Like
John Wayne, his act was simple, cheap, yet effective.
But he didn't fool me or anyone I know. The loss of Ray Charles is worth a 1000
Reagans.

Good points. I have always struggled a bit with the Reagan legacy. I
believe it was in one of Louis Ruykeyser's (sp?) books that summed up
my problem. It all depends on whether you judge him on what he said
or what he did. I agreed with almost everything he said, but not much
of what he said was actually what he did. Government never got
smaller, the deficits never went away, and on and on. He was amazing
as the teflon President, because he received all the credit and none
of the blame. He would take credit for the tax cuts, and the
democrats took the heat for the deficits. When all that "fly now, pay
later" school of government spending stimulated the economy, he was
quick to take the credit, but again, the democrats were responsible
for the deficits, not him, although he never submitted a balanced
budget and the Congress never spent more than he requested.

That seems to have become the pattern in Washington. Take the credit
and blame the democrats, even when they don't control the White House
or the Congress. Pretty neat trick. If all else fails, go back and
blame the last democrat or even Jimmy Carter. It keeps the masses
happy.

I was thinking today as the nonstop Ronald Reagan worship continues
24/7 in the media how strange it is that there is essentially a media
blackout of the funerals of those who are dying daily in Iraq. Reagan
was 93 and had lived a full life. Those guys are 19 and 20, about the
age of my son. Something wrong about that.

I have to say that I was an admirer of Reagan's charisma and message,
but I am not ready to deify the guy. He did make a huge mark on the
political landscape, though. That can't be said for most politicians.

Anyway, I hope the media-fest ends soon. This makes those royal
weddings seem like a walk in the park:)

Booby, your buddies, the UN inspectors, say Saddam shipped out WMD before
war and after
Friday, June 11, 2004
The United Nations has determined that Saddam Hussein shipped weapons of
mass destruction components as well as medium-range ballistic missiles
before, during and after the U.S.-led war against Iraq in 2003.

The UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission briefed the
Security Council on new findings that could help trace the whereabouts of
Saddam's missile and WMD program.

The briefing contained satellite photographs that demonstrated the speed
with which Saddam dismantled his missile and WMD sites before and during the
war. Council members were shown photographs of a ballistic missile site
outside Baghdad in May 2003, and then saw a satellite image of the same
location in February 2004, in which facilities had disappeared. UNMOVIC
acting executive chairman Demetrius Perricos told the council on June 9 that
"the only controls at the borders are for the weight of the scrap metal, and
to check whether there are any explosive or radioactive materials within the
scrap," Middle East Newsline reported.

"It's being exported," Perricos said after the briefing. "It's being traded
out. And there is a large variety of scrap metal from very new to very old,
and slowly, it seems the country is depleted of metal."

"The removal of these materials from Iraq raises concerns with regard to
proliferation risks," Perricos told the council. Perricos also reported that
inspectors found Iraqi WMD and missile components shipped abroad that still
contained UN inspection tags.

He said the Iraqi facilities were dismantled and sent both to Europe and
around the Middle East. at the rate of about 1,000 tons of metal a month.
Destionations included Jordan, the Netherlands and Turkey.
