Maxprop stated: His disease wasn't diagnosed until well into his second term
of office. And in actuality, that diagnosis was just an accurate guess since at that time, the only accurate way to diagnose Alzheimer's was a cadaver study on the brain. Accurate diagnosis is new....Until very recently, Alzheimer's was diagnosed as dementia, schizophrenia, bi-polar illness, stroke residue, and autonomic nerve disease. They all share common paths and symptoms. -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. I know a few Republican nuns but they wouldn't be interested in the job.... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Heinlein |

Reagan's physicians all concluded that he was suffering an unspecified age-related dementia while still in the White House. The actual term, Alzheimer's, didn't come until later, but he and his doctors knew he was ill before the term was applied to his case. It's possible that Reagan's doctors noticed that he had problems in this area while he was still in office, after all he perceived reality in a different way all his life. But he wasn't diagnosed with Alzheimer's until six years after he was out of office. That's a long gap for a diagnosis. DSK |

You may recall, Doug, that Alzheimer's wasn't exactly a household term during Reagan's terms. The preponderant body of knowledge concerning it was amassed during the Nineties, including diagnostic tools and techniques. Further it's not uncommon for such diagnoses to be made years or even a decade following the onset of Sx. Max |
