The report doesn't say how the pirates were armed, I assume they were.

As for "trying to fight with guns," what are you trying to say? That any
attempt to resist the piracy would be futile? What if the pirates had
decided to cut their throats, or just drop them overboard? Leaves no
witnesses... they'd be just as dead. I do not advocate carrying firearms
but it is not necessarily the wisest course to trust the good intentions
of criminals.

What is disturbing to me about this incident is that it's in well
travelled waters where any cruisers going through the Panama Canal would
find themselves.

Of course not. But, having guns tend to promote their use. It's
better to avoid the confrontation. Most of the time you'd be
out gunned anyway.
