Planing Dinghy
I hooked up my new 5hp outboard to the Quicksilver Dinghy. The dinghy is 9'10.
I was told it would probably not plane with less than 7hp...or perhaps that's for a smaller LOA. Anyway...it planes very nicely, especially if I keep my weight forward a bit. No way it'll plane with another person though. RB |

Yes...it's an inflatable like a Zodiac -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Heinlein |

you won't get it on step with a 5 hp kicker

Planing Dinghy
You heard me Bob..... a 5 hp won't put that rubber dinghy on step... you
won't get hole shot... or it'll take you 3 football fields to do it. Especially at your current weight. The minimum you'll need is an 8 hp or a 9.9hp. CM "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... | you won't get it on step with a 5 hp kicker | | What??? | | | RB |

The Quicksilver 300 is 9.10 and will plave with me in it with the 5HP. It would not do it with a smaller inflatable I suspect. It just makes 14 knots on flat water. More like 10 or 11 typically. This is a great chance to see what you know, Mooron. Let's set up a good bet and I'll have Suzanne snap the pics. I honestly did not expect it to plane with less than 7 hp. At full throttle it takes about 10 seconds and leaning forward helps. Once I'm out of the hole I can back off the throttle a bit, but not much. RB |
Planing Dinghy - I doubt it!
Well Bob.... I have seen dinghies 'plane' with a 5hp... with lighter crew,
but not before you lean well to the front and only in the calmest water after a very long straight run and only barely up on step.... pushing more water than planing on it.... and they won't do it with 2 people on board. Either way to call that planing is a stretch. My 9.9hp on a 10ft Zodiac will get hole shot in 10 feet.... and tops at 20 knots.... that's planing Bob... that's up on step.... and it will do it in 15 feet with 2 people or twenty feet with 4 people. Take the picture and prove me wrong..... I don't bet online, and when someone has to resort to a bet to prove the point it's already a lost cause on their part. I'm callin' ya on this one. With anyone else on board, it won't plane. Tried it. But in calm water I made 13.9 knots and tapped 14. Running her disp. she'll only do 5 or 6, then slowly lifts up and starts skating. The motor was a freebee, so I'm not complaining. I asked a few people and they said it would never happen, except the 300 is fairly long with an inflatable keel. I WILL snap a pic of it this week.
