Planing Dinghy
I hooked up my new 5hp outboard to the Quicksilver Dinghy. The dinghy is 9'10.
I was told it would probably not plane with less than 7hp...or perhaps that's for a smaller LOA. Anyway...it planes very nicely, especially if I keep my weight forward a bit. No way it'll plane with another person though. RB |

Yes...it's an inflatable like a Zodiac -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Heinlein |

What??? RB |
Planing Dinghy
You heard me Bob..... a 5 hp won't put that rubber dinghy on step... you
won't get hole shot... or it'll take you 3 football fields to do it. Especially at your current weight. The minimum you'll need is an 8 hp or a 9.9hp. CM "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... | you won't get it on step with a 5 hp kicker | | What??? | | | RB |

The Quicksilver 300 is 9.10 and will plave with me in it with the 5HP. It would not do it with a smaller inflatable I suspect. It just makes 14 knots on flat water. More like 10 or 11 typically. This is a great chance to see what you know, Mooron. Let's set up a good bet and I'll have Suzanne snap the pics. I honestly did not expect it to plane with less than 7 hp. At full throttle it takes about 10 seconds and leaning forward helps. Once I'm out of the hole I can back off the throttle a bit, but not much. RB |
Planing Dinghy - I doubt it!
Well Bob.... I have seen dinghies 'plane' with a 5hp... with lighter crew,
but not before you lean well to the front and only in the calmest water after a very long straight run and only barely up on step.... pushing more water than planing on it.... and they won't do it with 2 people on board. Either way to call that planing is a stretch. My 9.9hp on a 10ft Zodiac will get hole shot in 10 feet.... and tops at 20 knots.... that's planing Bob... that's up on step.... and it will do it in 15 feet with 2 people or twenty feet with 4 people. Take the picture and prove me wrong..... I don't bet online, and when someone has to resort to a bet to prove the point it's already a lost cause on their part. I'm callin' ya on this one. With anyone else on board, it won't plane. Tried it. But in calm water I made 13.9 knots and tapped 14. Running her disp. she'll only do 5 or 6, then slowly lifts up and starts skating. The motor was a freebee, so I'm not complaining. I asked a few people and they said it would never happen, except the 300 is fairly long with an inflatable keel. I WILL snap a pic of it this week. I won't be back till next week to see it..... and I'm not dissin' your
set-up.... just the fact that a 9 foot inflatable will plane with a load like that being pushed by a 5hp. My favourite set-up was a 15hp Merc with an 8hp cowling and decal on the kicker... mounted on a 7.5 ft inflatable. Now that will plane!!! Hole shot was immediate. Looked for all intents and purposes like an 8hp..... man did that get attention when I lit it up. 30 knots is way too fast on a 7.5' inflatable.... even standing up with the kill switch rigged. I could only take one person to shore at a time.... but did multiple trips in a very short time. CM "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... | Well Bob.... just the fact that a 9 foot inflatable will plane with a load
like that being pushed by a 5hp. You're right on that...the 5HP works too hard. The 5hp is pretty light to carry. Ideally I wanted a little 3.5, even though that wouldn't plane at all. Main problem is....I have little room on my rail for the motor. It'll have to go in the sail locker. RB |

MC,
Your bet is pretty safe. I haven't seen many inflatables built with a "Step" I've seen many on Plane but none on "Step" Do you mean a single step or three point step? OT |

My Rhib planes with just me aboard with 5HP no problem. I'm 6'4" and

Try stepping onto the centerline... Well, duh....if you didn't on this dinghy you would end up very wet for sure....even stepping on the centerline makes the thing skate out from under you....heck, the thing weighs less than 75 lbs all told and has very little freeboard to speak of....like stepping onto a concave surfboard with seats... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Perhaps you would like to try standing on a sinker? Bend your knees...
