It was even nicer to see it in person. This shot was taken on her last trip,
from Boston about 20 miles to Marblehead in July, 1997. I don't know how they got a shot with only one boat in view - there must have been 5000 boats out there. Although most people in Boston loved the event, all of the former recent captains of the Constitution signed a petition asking that she not be risked again in such a venture. Old Ironsides does continue to do an annual turn-around and various other short trips. They continue to train with sails, but attached to an escort tug. Although I'm currently berthed about a mile away (near the scenic LNG off-loading facility) I kept my previous boat at Constitution Marina. This was the view from the transient slip I used they last time I was the http://www.sv-loki.com/Along_the_Way/constitution.jpg "Joe" wrote in message om... "Bart Senior" wrote in message .net... Negative, Nav. The U.S.S. Constitution doesn't have a motor, and when that shot
was taken she was free of her tow line, sailing on her own. Ten years ago she was in dry dock for a long planned restoration. It was intended to be only limited work, but after an inspection it was decided to do a full restoration. However, it would be unfair to say it "had nearly sunk from neglect," since the hull was relatively sound. "Navigator" wrote in message ... Hey Joe,
I think the Constitution should be sailed from port to port and put on display evey year, instead of sitting at a dock. It's not much better than Victory in permament dry dock--A sad state for a ship of the line. I'm embarassed to say that even Ole Ironsides, athough sailing, does not have full suit of sails. Perhaps American's have great pride in their country and
that is reflected in their flags. Big flags look good, no matter what country they represent. When in doubt go with the bigger size. I've been on Eagle and have a copy of their training manual. She has a beautiful double wheel. I'd like to sail on her someday. Bart Senior Capt. I don't know if Victory can sail, but if she went to sea and sunk I think the British government would have to resign because she is such a part of English history. Not just pumps -fire pumps! And steel belts to stop her splitting open.
At the time I wrote to the mayor pointing how appalling her state was and questioned how such a rich country not afford to maintain it's few historical relics and connection founding history. It seemed that the explanation resided in a lack of clear lines of responsibility between state and federal for historical items. Meanwhile she just decayed more and more rapidly. Scotty "Bart Senior" wrote in message .net... Hey Joe, I think the Constitution should be sailed from port to port and put on display evey year, instead of sitting at a dock. It's not much better than Victory in permament dry dock--A sad state for a ship of the line. I'm embarassed to say that even Ole Ironsides, athough sailing, does not have full suit of sails. We could do better for her too. Bart Joe wrote Unfit for sea ya say Bart! I thought the Brit's had pride in Englands naval past. It's always nice to see ol Ironsides offsho http://www.sheriff.co.wise.tx.us/cuf.../ironsides.jpg She's clearly cared for properly, still a US Navy ship of the line. Joe |

Maybe but I got the facts out into the open didn't I?

I guess that means they won't need your 'sailing' expertise. But the engine is on another boat that always shadows her. Dead wrong, nav. I was there. She was free of her tow lines. Admittedly, it was the first time in over 100 years, and may be the last, but she was sailing on here own, without a tow, for about an hour. http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/.../sailsked.html http://www.ecnnews.com/const/ironside.htm Sorry jeff I don't see how anything I posted was wrong -unless you are denying the motor boat -her primary source of propulsion was not in attendence. I didn't know they were hiding. Are you trying to replace Booby? You seem to
be adopting his style. "Navigator" wrote in message ... Maybe but I got the facts out into the open didn't I? Cheers Jeff Morris wrote: Wow! That's a 12,000 mile backpedal! Don't hurt yourself, Nav. Just wanted people to realize a) How badly she has been looked after in
the past so that it won't happen again and b) that's she's not seaworthy (and never will be). If the powers that be (or silly romantics) get carried away with the idea of her becoming a sail training vessel she will be likely lost -regardless of an ever present attending tug.
