I like to sail and my 13 yr old son loves paintball, So...........

Boat crews are armed with paintball guns, when all crew members are
shot, game is over. A shot member cannot shoot anymore or help sail.

Imagine the strategy that would evolve:

Bow raking would be inneffective cuz crew would hide in cockpit behind
cabin.
Stern raking would work well.
A boat being pursued would want to stay in the jib shadow of the
pursuer cuz the pursuer could only shoot from his cockpit while the
pursued could concentrate his fire there.
Two boat approaching each other across wind, the boat with "Weather
Gage" would have advantage cuz he would be shielded by his jib..

Possible games:

Fleet actions
Blockade runner where a single boat attempts to make it past other(s)
into port.
Small boats like Lasers or Sunfish could be "Gunboats"

I am going to test on an old sail to see if paintballs stain sails.

[snipped boatball rules and stratagies]

Sounds like fun, except, ... If you've ever been hit on the naked skin by one of these things you will be aware that the sting can be pretty nasty,
so you'd want to be wearing all the protective gear. Not a lot of fun if the weather is warm, I guess you could dump the chest protector and use your
PFD tho.

That might be fun, although Martin comments about the impact of
paintball on bare skin is something to consider... also the cleaning of
the boats afterwards.

Some years ago, a sailing club I was in experimented with all sorts of
sailing based games, including Phil Bolger's pirate game (which was
pretty cool), but also using soccer & basketballs. The best game
involved using 1 ball for every 2 or 3 boats, and a set of rules which
was not too complicated but involved scoring by bringing a ball into a
windward goal, without carrying the ball on board the boat for more than
a few seconds at a time. This resulted in a lot of close quarters
maneuvering drill and improved boat handling skills dramatically.

Been There... Done That... It's a Blast

Played a game called Treasure Hunt.... Island to Island hunt for hints and
warfare inbetween.

We used water balloon launchers as canons. Any vessel struck had to do a
penalty 180, 5 strikes and you were out for that leg. Paint ball guns for
the crews while at sea and ashore. We also allowed broom handles covered in
closed cell foam as hand to hand weapons. Boarding other vessels and
capturing crew was encouraged. Undefended vessels 9 crew ashore looking for
next hint or treasure) could be captured.

I suggest at least 5 "Legs " or "Stages" and at least as many vessels.

I've played similar games with a frisbee. It really really imploves
things if you use a frisbee that floats. Not all do, as we found out
the hard way.

I think I'd pass on paintballs hitting my boat and sails. Stupid idea unless
you sail a McGregor or an older C&C.

Still a stupid idea. The paintballs would put holes through the
topsides & decks of those boats......

Mooron, you may be onto something there! Think of the possibilities for the geezers. You could load the thing with fluorescent orange balls laced with
skunk odor. The even the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary should be able to pick a perp marked with such!

Cheers
