Jonathan Ganz April 27th 04 07:37 AM

Can I be in the club now? Huh huh can I?

Just so there's no doubt....

The twelve commandments of flaming

1. Make things up about your opponent: It's important to make your
lies sound true. Preface your argument with the word "clearly."
"Clearly, Fred Flooney is a liar, and a dirtball to boot."

2. Be an armchair psychologist: You're a smart person. You've
heard of Freud. You took a psychology course in college.
Clearly, you're qualified to psychoanalyze your opponent. "Polly
Purebread, by using the word 'zucchini' in her posting, shows she
has a bad case of penis envy."

3. Cross-post your flames: Everyone on the net is just waiting for
the next literary masterpiece to leave your terminal. From
rec.arts.wobegon to alt.gourmand, they're all holding their
breaths until your next flame. Therefore, post everywhere.

4. Conspiracies abound: If everyone's against you, the reason can't
*possibly* be that you're a ****head. There's obviously a
conspiracy against you, and you will be doing the entire net a
favor by exposing it.

5. Lawsuit threats: This is the reverse of Rule #4 (sort of like
the Yin & Yang of flaming). Threatening a lawsuit is always
considered to be in good form. "By saying that I've posted to
the wrong group, Bertha has libeled me, slandered me, and
sodomized me. See you in court, Bertha."

6. Force them to document their claims: Even if Harry Hoinkus
states outright that he likes tomato sauce on his pasta, you
should demand documentation. If Newsweek hasn't written an
article on Harry's pasta preferences, then Harry's obviously
lying.

7. Use foreign phrases: French is good, but Latin is the lingua
franca of flaming. You should use the words "ad hominem" at
least three times per article. Other favorite Latin phrases are
"ad nauseum," "vini, vidi, vici," and "fetuccini alfredo."

8. Tell 'em how smart you a Why use intelligent arguments to
convince them you're smart when all you have to do is tell them?
State that you're a member of Mensa or Mega or Dorks of America.
Tell them the scores you received on every exam since high
school. "I got an 800 on my SATs, LSATs, GREs, MCATs, and I can
also spell the word 'premeiotic' ."

9. Accuse your opponent of censorship. It is your right as an
American citizen to post whatever the hell you want to the net
(as guaranteed by the 37th Amendment, I think). Anyone who tries
to limit your cross-posting or move a flame war to email is
either a communist, a fascist, or both.

10. Doubt their existence: You've never actually seen your opponent,
have you? And since you're the center of the universe, you
should have seen them by now, shouldn't you? Therefore, THEY
DON'T EXIST! This is the beauty of flamers' logic.

11. Lie, cheat, steal, leave the toilet seat up.

12. When in doubt, insult: If you forget the other 11 rules,
remember this one. At some point during your wonderful career as
a flamer you will undoubtedly end up in a flame war with someone
who is better than you. This person will expose your lies, tear
apart your arguments, make you look generally like a bozo. At
this point, there's only one thing to do: insult the dirtbag!!!
"Oh yeah? Well, your mother does strange things with
vegetables."

The Golden Rule of Flaming

My flames will be witty, insulting, interesting, funny, caustic, or
sarcastic, but never, ever, will they be boring.

Here endeth the scriptures.

Thank you. I hope she's as attractive in person as she in on the
Internet, but for the price I could live with a wrinkle or two.

I foresee sunburn in my future.

Went through my West Marine catalog some last night.* I could easily
spend more on accessories than I did on the boat.

I can't see where it has a VHF radio, and while you can get through
the locks without one, having one is a whole lot easier. I don't have
much use for a GPS receiver, as I find it hard to believe that I could
become sufficiently lost on a river as to need one. A hand bearing
compass might be good, though.

It's generally very windy here, so a storm jib might find its way into
the sail locker, and a dodger sounds like an attractive addition.

A few months ago I was reading fairly regularly, but the incessant
flamefest became tiring. We'll see.

*Use the catalog to identify the products, and the Internet to get a
better price. Which shouldn't be all that hard, I mean sheesh. I
don't mind if they smoke dope, I do mind that they don't share.

Like you, I got a great deal on a boat. Which means that I've probably

sure exacty, I stopped counting when I got to a factor of three.

I don't mind giving some business to West/BoatUS - they do provide a service
with stores, 6 in my area, and a nice catalog. However, for a major purchase,
I'll always check out the alternatives. Until recently, I gave a lot of
business to a family run chandlery, Marine Exchange (known locally as
"Arlene's"), but, sadly, they're out of business now.

I was disappointed when I checked out the latest West and Boat/US catalogs.
They are now almost identical and the selection seems limited. A few days ago I
was in the local Boat/US and asked for pricing of some items in the Clearance
section. It turned out that many of the items were there because they are
discontinued by the merger, but the price is actually the original price, which
seems like deceptive marketing. I handed the items to the clerk and walked out.

Ok, I'm all over it. Is there a membership card,

There's a card *and* a 'Certificate Of Membership' (for mounting on a
bulkhead, so that both the club inspectors, and ordinary visitors to your
vessel, can instantly appraise your status).

and do we wear
cool jackets like the bowling team?

Yeah check out the bloted banana helming Alien.

Proper, navy blue blazer, please. The club's embroidered 'Wheel & Anchor'
logo should be sewn onto the blazer pocket (will be sent in the post). The
cravat and 'Little Admiral' cap are optional, but recommended.

That will clash with the tin foil hats most members here wear.

...barring the above an alternate dress code of a fake Rasta Dread wig and
any earthy coloured cannabis fabric clothing combined with vast

quantities
of booze aboard will pass muster for membership.

Remember.... the difference between adversity and adventure is attitude.

ha ha, seriously tho, WM or Boats-r-US used to have a 'new boat discount'.
A discusion on another list as to weather they still do, seemed to confirm
that some of the stores do. It's a discount for 3 months after the purchase
of a boat. Don't have all the details.

WoW, what insight! You must be an economist, right?

Well, it does seem to come as a bit of a shock to the folks who expect

West
to "share."

It's rapidly becoming apparent that my little quip flew right over
your masthead. Go watch a couple of Cheech & Chong movies, and get
back to us if you have any questions.
