The "older" Mac to which you refer had a dagger board keel instead of the wider, swing keel of the Mac 26x. Wrong. The older Mac 26 was built in a variety of models, some of which had daggerboards, some of which had minimally ballasted centerboards. None had "swing keels" nor did the Mac 26X. There was an earlier yet boat called the Mac 25 which *did* have a swing keel and a very similar hull to the old water ballast M26. You don't know what you're talking about. We've all seen Macs sailing... pounding to weather in a 10 knot breeze.... helplessly drifting into a lee shore, unable to claw off with a 15 knot wind on the beam.... accidental gybing, repeatedly on a gentle run. They mostly sailed her and found her to be pretty bad, with poor upwind ability and a very cheap feel. Under power, she did not get up on a plane until they (4 people total) balanced their weight better. I assumed there was some chop. They were looking to buy, but found the sailing performance less than thrilling. They've been mostly renting small sailboats and taking courses in California. They had not sailed the 26X, so this was just a stand-alone test of the M model. I've been aboard the new version, but did not sail her. I can confirm that she's very lightly built and lacking in comfort below, compared to the average Catalina 27. There's a reason for all of the Mac bashing. While she might fit someone's needs, her performance is so poor as to have earned her a general disdain. The build quality, still pretty much the same, is also not highly valued. Speak to a few surveyors. I would not put my family on one, certainly not on anything more than VERY protected waters, such as a small lake. I currently work as a broker part time and have learned a lot about the market. I recently declined two Macs because no brand has a faster loss ratio and owners are pretty shocked by it. How about his expectation that he can motor away from incoming heavy weather at lots of knots when the boat has the usual complement of sails, spars, people, and gear? He seems to think he can make 'book speed', when that speed is quoted for an unloaded and stripped-down boat. I gather the reality is that he'll make little more than a decent sailboat (10kt or so?) and that's keeping everyone below or in the cockpit. ... He should have test sailed it before buying. Agreed.
