Any Dinghy Sailors Out There?
 

My wife and I sail the hell out of a Hunter 14.5 footer on the Gulf of Mexico.
We've made some minor modifications, of course.

It goes really fast in good wind, and we can sail it right on the edge of the
no sail zone (45 degrees off the wind). The boat is named, naturally,
"Veridican."

What about you--what do you sail?

I'm not familiar with the 14.5. Does it have a keel?

I've been sailing my Cal 20 a fair amount. Just got
a new main and jib. Makes a huge difference from
the rags I had before. I'm also teaching on a Yamaha
30 (both in the bay) and a Holder 20 (swing keel) on
a lake... not much wind, but it makes for a good
comparison to the SF bay.

Any Dinghy Sailors Out There?
 

I had a Lido 14 for several years, and really enjoyed it. It could get
up on a plane in the right conditions, which was pretty exciting.

No keel, just a swingboard. The Hunter 146, as it is called, is brand new. I
think they've only been out for a year.

So, you sail on the SF Bay? I sail in the Gulf off the panhandle of FL. We've
never got our boat to plane, but then there are two of us in the boat and
whoever's in the crew position is weighing down the front end. How do you get a
dinghy to plane?

Yeah, the 146. It's 14.5 feet long. I don't know if it's a fast boat or not,
especially compared to say racing boats of that size, but it sure seems to haul
compared to the Apollo 16 footer we once had.

Get a JY 15.

We thought about that, but we didn't like the looks of the JY15. It had that
racing boat look, which of course I suppose it should have being it's a racing
boat. The 146 is like a big bath tub. The interior is all molded with no shapr
edges. It seems very solid and safe, and I suppose it is. But it moves well,
even with the slightest wind. We capsized it once in heavy wind, and it was
very easy to flip back over.
