Why don't you guys just leave it alone
Pretty obvious by now, "Jim Cate" is just a troll, pretty successful one at
that. If he isn't and he ends up doing what he claims he's going to do, you probably won't be hearing much from him down the road. If he is, which I strongly suspect, he's got everyone here, almost everyone, firmly hooked. Now I will admit he hooked me but unless it's blatantly obvious(politics or something of that nature) I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. It is blatantly obvious that "Jim" is just trolling along, he admitted as much very recently when he posted.................. "Actually, I knew what I was getting into when I decided to defend the Macs on this ng, since this group has been bashing them for a number of years." Which would make his initial posts, claiming he wanted "opinions" about the mac, bald-faced lies. Which would greatly increase the probability that everything he has posted is untrue. I was making a sincere effort to collect information about several boats, including the Mac, but also including several others. If my wife hadn't been so negative about the ratty interior of the Cal 34, I was ready to put a deposit on it and get a survey. John Cairns In addition to the obviously biased, obviously uninformed "opinions" that I anticipated from past experiences on this ng, I had hoped that I would also get some substantive, factual information from at least a few knowledgeable contributors who had actually sailed the 26M, or who at least knew what what they were. Instead, I got a long serious of opinionated garbage from ng members who wasted most of a week trying to convince me that the "old" boat was the same thing as the "new" boat. In other words, despite the fact that they had no idea what the 26M was, they still tried to put me down for giving them some specs regarding the boat. (I was only repeating Rogers advertising, they said, and the boat probably didn't really have a different hull, different keel, different sails, different ballast system, etc., etc. - I was just sucked in by MacGregor's advertising.) I asked for information, I got none, I then researched the matter and, with consideration of my wife's preferences of my wife, made the decision to get the Mac 26M. - This isn't trolling, under any rational definition. At that point, on March 25, I visited the Mac dealer in the area, discussed prices and options, and placed an order. As previously noted, I am not defending the Mac as the world's greatest sailboat, and I never claimed it was suitable for blue water crossings. - I did say that it had been given a bum rap on this newsgroup, and that I was going to provide a little fresh air and balance to the discussion. (Actually, had my wife not been so turned off, I probably would have gone ahead and bid on the Cal, subject to the results of a survey.) Boston Pops on 4th of July! Living all my life in Boston I've attended both on many, many occasions.
Symphony Hall is one of the best venues in the country. I've been there five times this season, most recently to see Bobby McFerrin - a great show, especially with the Symphony Hall acoustics. However, the July 4th event on the river is a spectacle not to be missed, at least a few times. For a number of years I worked in the boathouse directly across from the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. Perfect seats for the fireworks, but we used the TV and radio to bring in the concert. I haven't gone over to watch the concert in a few years - only the first 200,000 get good seats. Symphony Hall was sold out, the first time I've seen it filled this year. It was a great concert; lots of audience participation. McFerrin is an incredible musician. Making a special appearance was harpist Deborah Henson-Conant, who amazed all with her "electric blues harp" and singing, which sounded like Bonnie Riatt. Their duets were worth the price of admission. McFerrin finished with a Wizard of Oz medley, and then did the Mickey Mouse Club Song for an encore. Were you working at Community Boating? I sailed out of
there for five years, and enjoyed walking along the Half Shell. Community Boating had 81 total boats, including 51 Mercuries when I was there. I bet the Mercuries are all still there. We have three left at the boat club. This is where I learned to sail, on these same Mercuries. Now, I'm in charge of refurbishing them this year. They are tanks --15.5' 630 lbs worth of solid fiberglass. These boat are so tough, when the kids hit the dock, the dock gets damanged. Since we have three, and they will be used for the youngest juniors--9 year olds. I was surprised to see they only had numbers and no names. One nice thing about running the project--I get to pick the names. I love naming boats. There is an art to it. They must be fitting and cool. I thought of kids crashing into docks and then I thought, three boats, then I thought--"The Three Stooges". Moe, Larry and Curly. I spent the moring sanding "Larry" down before I went sailing. I'm trying to find another boat or two for donation. Others names could be named Nyuck, Nyuck-Nyuck, or Curly-Joe. I learned on these same boats, nearly 39 years ago! I still remember the centerboards, that drop like a guillotine. So I have a certain foundness for them and want to make them look really nice. In my first few days there I took the shore class, then went out once or twice with other kids and decided I was ready to solo. Within 10 minutes I was aground on the island, hauled off, and pointed back to the dock which I rammed full speed!
