Rather than asking everyone here to explain these things to you, have
you considered a Power Squadron course? One of the boats I chartered
in Maine, a Hinckley Pilot 35 had one of the RDFs installed, along
with a temperature guage in the cabin reflecting the temperature of
the seawater. I'll let you guess what that was used for
As the
boat had a Loran, the RDF was of little use to us for that cruise
other than as a curiosity. They were very useful back in the preLoran
days when this particular boat was built..at least to someone who
knows how to use one.
