You should have a great time. I've been told it's a great place to sail.
Can you give us some more details?

Don't venture into Greek waters. It could prove costly.

How so, Donal.? The wife and I were thinking about chartering in the area a
while back, her poor health would probably make it something that's not
going to happen any time soon. I did a little research and was amazed to
find that it was considerably cheaper to fly there than to the Caribbean,
and charter rates were lower also. So, what are the pros/cons of chartering
in the eastern Mediterranean?

They might get suckered into buying a used boat, beware
of those who stand on their heads wearing greek sailor caps.

Greece and Turkey are *very* hostile towards each other. Civility is only
maintained because Turkey wishes to join the EU.

If you sail from one country to the other, you can get stung for "entry
fees", and there are all sorts of formalities that you must go through.

It is an issue over here because "freedom of movement" is a basic right in
the EU. Turkey wants to join the EU, but she(or Greece??) is unwilling to
drop the paperwork and money that is required to sail between the two
countries.

I've sailed in Greek, and in Turkish waters. I found the Turks to be much
more friendly. I also found that the food was more varied in Turkey. I
won't go back to Greece again. We are probably going to go back to Turkey
this year for a Hotel based, dinghy sailing holiday.

In July and August, the temperatures in the Eastern Mediterranian will reach
40*C+. This is hotter than the Caribbean. June and September are probably
great months to go there. Different resorts have vastly different wind
patterns. Some areas are very predictable, (0kts at 09:00, 30 kts at
16:00). Other areas are much less predictable. The brochures usually give
an indication of what you should expect.

I hope that your wife's health improves.

Perhaps John was on vacation during that exchange, I thought
Donal was referencing that fiasco also, however reading his
response that was not his intention, though it would have
been his style.

Do tell, or maybe Oz will, what exactly that fiasco was? I vaguely recall
something about a Greek sailors cap being a punchline, but that's about it.

A year or so ago Oz had great fun riling some of the more thin skinned
US citizens on this group when he told a tale of selling one of his boats that he had
in charter in the Med. Seems he sold the boat to a "septic" from Texas
for somewhat more than the boat could have been acquired for on the open
market. Not that Oz deliberately set out to fleece anyone, apparently the
Texan simply fell in love with the boat and made on offer too good to
refuse. Nutsy was a little put out. Oz also purports to sport a
Greek fisherman's cap.

Cheers
