Digital Photography Review is probably the best place on the web to get

real
info on digital cameras.
If you want a real camera get a Canon EOS 10D
http://www.dpreview.com/

Sadly, all of true HE reflex cameras are still second gen. units. Only
professional working photographer should bother with those. The truth is

that
even a low cost Olympus D-360 takes fine pics. A G5 only does better if

you
take the time to really learn the camera. For a boat-based unit, a Z1,

Sony U30
or a weatherproof U60 or Stylus 400 make a lot more sense.
In the league of cameras costing under 1K, the Z1 offers a lot....10X

optical
zoom, ability to shoot good quality video with sound, superior focus and
flash...for under 400.00.
Here's the end of the review...
Based on my testing, I can confidently say that the Minolta DiMAGE Z1

is one
of the best bargains on the market for a long-zoom digicam. I was quite
impressed though, with the way the Z1 combined a novice-friendly design

with a
surprising array of advanced features to satisfy more expert users. The

price
point, battery life, and shutter lag/cycle time performance are also
impressive. Minolta has a great track record for high-quality lenses on

their
digicams, and the Z1's lens is no exception, turning in a better than

average
performance for a long-zoom model, with good sharpness and low chromatic
aberration. The Z1's color was also very good, hue-accurate and

appropriately
saturated, although I'd like to see it just a slight bit brighter.

Contrast is
a little high, but a low-contrast option helps greatly on that score. All

in
all, it's hard to find much to fault about the Z1, apart from the somewhat
"Buck Rogers"-styled case, which I don't personally care for. Highly
recommended

Here is an interesting review from a DiMage Z1 owner. You will probably
relate to the Wal-Mart thing

Relate?? I think that Bob wrote it! Look at the previous sentence:-

"My most pressing concern was how it blended with my appearance,
did I look good while I was carrying it around? "

That is the very essence of Bobsprit, neatly distilled into one shallow
sentence.

And the Z1 can also shoot up to 10 FPS!!
It can also (how many can do this??) shoot 30 FPS 640X480 movie mode with 8
minutes continous video on a 512 card! Or nearly an hour at low res with sound!
On my big screen TV it looks like VHS camcorder footage....smooth and clear!
How about a LCD with a 60 FPS refresh rate? How about the fastest AF system on
the market? How about one of the best flashes tested, even against 800 dollar
sony and Nikon!? How about a startup time of 2 seconds!?
Weaknesses? Sure. Construction is not even close to the G5. Lens is good but
not great, though very sharp. I don't love the little musical rifts it plays,
though they can be shut off.
I can't wait for a 5 or 6 MP version of this baby!

It's an ugly camera. There are better ones out there and they look better
and are more user-friendly. The one you got is fine, but it's clunky looking
to say the least.

An "ugly camera?" I think I care more about what it can do. try holding one.
Far better than most with it's grip and all of the controls are smartly placed.
I've used dozens of cameras and this is a fave for me now, especially after
owning much more expensive models.

I do also, but it *is* an ugly camera. It's also large. Large for no reason.
It looks clunky, but I guess if it's chrome it must be good.

It must be horrible to be so shallow. His paltry existence depends on
impressing this NG, which he has failed to do time & time again. Poor, poor
shallow bob.

It's resolution is useless unless you have a very high end printer. Nice camera
though.
