The prion that is assumed to be the cause of BSE exists only in the bovine's brain and spinal column or intestines if the animal has just ingested contaminated food that contains the prion. If this prion is, indeed, the cause of the encephalitis then one would have to eat raw brains, spinal columns or intestines in order to be in danger of becoming a host to the prion.
