I have a friend who may be purchasing a sailboat for a liveaboard in the
spring. Greatlakes or east coast, any Ideas?

Buy a powerboat with a blown engine and tow it to a slip. Get a small cruiser
for the summer, and with the money he saves he can charter in the islands in the
winter.

East coast, definitely. The great lakes are way polluted and frozen over 8
months a year.

If he wants a "live-aboard" then a houseboat will be better than a sailboat.
Or better yet, a mobile home. A mobile home that floats (sort of)

There are dozens if not hundreds of old Gulfstar, Morgan, Endeavor, etc etc
etc center cockpit boats for sale cheap. If he's willing to go with wood or
ferrocement, you can get one VERY cheap.

However, if he really wants a sailboat.

here's one.

here's two. These are also center cockpit boats but should sail pretty well.
In fact a friend of mine races against a different Sirena up near Chicago
and he says most people don't believe it's a center cockpit boat at all.

If he wants a boat to really sail, here's one that could also be cruised

You'd spend your nights bumping your head on the pipes that hold up the
deck. Good looking boat though.
