3 blade feathering prop
My three blade prop causes no drag because it is out of the water completely when I'm sailing. The weight of your engine at the stern pushes your stern down and creates drag. In poor conditions, the weight of the engine, up high and aft helps to make your boat porpoise, also creating drag. Neal thinks his engine is lighter and here too he is wrong because he fails to consider leverage. On a real sailing vessel, the engine is mounted low, below the waterline, making it's weight a balast component that is part of the design envelope. On Neal's boat, the engine is up high and all the way aft. It has MUCH more negative impact than an inboard engine. Finally, in a rare but always possible emergency where his engine might be needed, it lacks the draft to make it effective in even moderate seas and it's likely to get swamped altogether. Outboards are like outhouses. They stink, they're ugly, they don't work as well as an "inboard" head and you want them far, far away! RB |
