Anyone entering the race in Jan of 2004? Just curious. Great way to go to

I fail to see how a series of around the bouy races held off Key West would be
a great way to get to Cuba.

Since I'll be retired in January I was planning on selling the Express and
buying a Mumm 30 and a trailer but decided to go to the BVIs in stead. Maybe
next year.

Oops! I had spoken to a guy at my dock and was told that the race was called
the Key West race. I guess I have been misinformed? What is the race that
goes from Key West to Hemingway marina?

You are probably thinking of the Havana Cup Regatta, which was
cancelled by the political winds blowing in Washington these days.
Although most people in Congress and most Americans don't favor such
sanctions, don't expect the "will of the people" to carry much sway
with the current administration. Hell, if Bush needs a few more
Florida votes, we may invade Cuba before the next election. In any
event, unless you have Cuban roots, it is extremely difficult to visit
Cuba. Things may change after the election, but probably not before
then.

Tactics count for far less than most people think. In fact, unless you are racing
against a boat & crew that are almost perfectly matched, they count for nothing.
People give away minutes in a race by mediocre sail trim, poor tacks, failing to

gas harder than most beach cats. This calls for changing sail trim as the boat
accelerates. I bet this is part of what Oz1 is talking about. It's a fun boat but
I wouldn't expect to go against the rock stars for a couple years, and it would be
an expensive boat to campaign.

I think you have your races confused, Historically, Key West Race has
been more of a round the buoy kind of deal.

I know they do very well. I've been on the race course with them. Thankfully
they are in another class. They seem to get their picture in Spinsheet quite a
bit so I thought somebody was sleeping with the editor.

I guess my above statement is largely due to not thinking of picking shifts, reading

I tend to think of "tactics" as just the interaction with other boats... right-of-way

side of a 10degree shift.

One of the issues of deciding how to sail the boat, and route by shifts or current etc

Sure, at anytime extra boatspeed is a winner in the hands of someone

dated) get a copy of "Go For The Gold" by Gary Hoyt.

Yep, but getting off the line with good speed and clear air is also a
tactic. Pre start prep and positioning are one of the most important
tactics.

Yes, I'd agree that getting a good start with speed, clear air, and the freedom to
choose which way to go, are all important. One of the fascinating things about sailboat
racing is that all the factors are important, yet certain ones will gain key importance
in some conditions.

Yep, the crew is trimming constantly, they do need to be perfect.
Plenty of sailmakers in Mumm crews.

Extremely expensive and that's without considering the outrageous
purchase price and the amount of time they spend on their side
breaking gear.
Personally, as much as I love the M30, I'd be lookin at a Farr 40

How about a Corel 45? Don't know if there are enough of them to make a one-design clas
anywhere, but it looks like a heck of a fun boat.

Have a look at the deltas for a Farr 40

I've been on both the FARR 40 and 39. Nice boats but I wouldn't want to buy
the sails or pay the slip fee. Also I probably wouldn't like singlehandling
one after the first few times. Then there's that folding the main in 90 deg
heat thing by yourself. Wouldn't be for me. Boob**** maybe next year.
