It's the end of the world
"John Cairns" wrote in message ... I thought the juxtaposition was funny, read the very kind Mac review, turn the page, read the Malo review. It seems the Malo story was copied verbatim from the print edition minus the photography. I always get the impression that these "reviews" are written with advertising revenues in mind. I've never seen a review that said "This is a crap boat, with no redeeming features whatsoever." Yet, such boats exist. The Mac26X could be kindly described as "The perfect boat for the poverty stricken person who would like to go sailing, but who knows nothing at all about sailing." Equally, the Coronado 27 should be described as "The perfect boat for the poverty stricken person who would like to go sailing." I've almost given up reading sailing mags. Regards Donal -- |
It's the end of the world
If, like me, you've read sailing magazines for more than five
years you've come to the conclusion there is nothing new under the sun. I have a file about four inches thick into which I put articles, reference data, specs, how-to's etc from sailing magazines I used to subscribe to. I quit putting stuff into the file when it started to repeat. This occurred after only three or four years time. I pick up a sailing magazine at the newsstands from time to time and see only the same old crap but with more ads for very large yachts in which no normal or sane sailor would be interested even if they could afford them. Sailing magazines have been taken over by female editors and are populated by has-been and wannabe writers and columnists who serve mostly to fill the magazine with crap that complements various advertisers. It's the end of the world
I've had occasion to speak with someone who, among other things, reviews new
boats for a US based magazine. We discussed this issue, he mentioned that you can generally tell when he is not enamored of a particular boat. He also mentioned a test sail of a model produced by a major US manufacturer, there were some serious technical issues with this boat, the magazine didn't run the review. The only review of the Mac26X that appeared in a magazine that could be characterized as unbiased was the one that ran in "Practical Sailor", you have to wonder what they were trying to say, they didn't actually sail the boat. Hell, it doesn't make any difference to me, I have no plans on buying a new boat, and there are enough resources out there to get a fairly decent evaluation of just about any used boat out there should I decide to change boats. There are two in my area and they sail often. I even met the owner of one who traded it in for a Pearson. They just don't sail well. RB |

I've seen 5 or 6 sailing.

We have at least 5 in my marina, ironic considering you only have to motor
about 500' or so before you can put up the sails. I have seen them putzing about under sail, have even seen one under full power heading directly upwind, quite a sight.I even have photographic evidence that they do sail. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...43355546oSuBZF And I have only seen one in the "full power" mode. Someone posted a link to an owner's Mac page, he loved his boat and thought
it sailed pretty well, but then he made the statement that "he hadn't sailed any other boats" so he nothing to compare it to. I don't hate Macs, I do feel a little sorry for the folks that spend 25k for something like this mainly because they don't feel confident enough to buy a used boat for their first sailboat. Who has seen one sailing? I have. It was pretty pathetic. We couldn't figure out what was wrong. = We came into Muskegon Lake from the channel on main and half jib, and = let out the furler as we passed the marker buoy...the Mac 26X was up = ahead of us with everything out, which is not considerable...dinky = sails...and was making way at about 2 knots to our 5...and the wind was = blowing about 10-12...at first we thought maybe they were on a bad point = of sail but when we paralleled them we kept our speed and zoomed on = past...the hull configuration is just all wrong to sail...either that or = they need to stick on a stouter, taller mast, a longer boom and get some = sails that will make all that weight move. Ugly things...would rather = have an old fixer upper with a leak than a new Mac26X --=20 katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. One is used to power upwind in the mornings when breeze is lightish
and sails home of an afternoon reaching and running at a very respectable pace. I believe the owner is using the boat as it was intended. So what you're saying is that they're little more than a river barge. --=20 katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. I used to get 'Mother Earth News' in the 70's & 80's. Stopped when they had nothing new to offer. Ditto 'Home Shop Machinist'. They eventually need to start running articles for the newbies and the old subscribers lose interest. That set of people have probably bought all the 'must have' gear and become a lot more sophisticated about the luxury stuff so they're no loss to advertisers anyway. Newbies will spend more money. I finally found sufficient justification for buying a framing nailgun tho. Not sure what boat stuff it'll come in handy for, but it makes building the shed frames a lot simpler. PDW |
