Oh, do tell us how much 6.1 or 7.1source material is out there and why he
should unload his 5.1 system. I guess you'll just come back with "gee, fake 6.1 is just the bomb" Loco, all Dolby Digital will play through the rear CENTER channel so long as you have EX decoding. All of it. Only DTS won't. So that means MOST material will play 6.1. I'm not going to attack you over this, I only learned about it when I upgraded to a current decoder. The rear center is quite nice. I'm using 3 matched B&W LM-1s with a secondary Paradigm sub. Here's a pic of Center rear: http://members.aol.com/bobsprit/images/room2.jpg RB |

If there were descrete 6.1 or 7.1 source material out there it might mean something. We've seen your little "theater" room. If you had a 30'x45' room with effects speakers on the sides your rear center might mean something. Right now I doubt if you can notice it. So quit knocking the guy for his 5.1. Here's a description of the "non-discrete" rear center channel. Matrixed? In a
manner. Processed as discrete channel. Yup. "The new sound format provides filmmakers with greater flexibility. With conventional surround technology, the sound field in the back of the theatre can be perceived as coming from a general area to the left or right of the auditorium. With Dolby Digital Surround EX, back surround information is reproduced by the theatre's rear speakers, while left and right surround information is reproduced by the side speakers. The addition of a new surround channel with this use of speakers allows a sound designer to create true "fly-over" and "fly-around" effects that are smoother and much more accurately placed, either directly behind or directly beside the audience." 5.1 systems are long outdated. Haven't had one since laser discs. RB |

Hey Boob since Laserdisc was analog tell us how you derived a 5.1 audio
signal off one of those discs. Good Lord, Loco. Dolby Pro Logic derived rear and center channels for 4.1 and 5.1 systems since the early 90's, even with VHS and EARLY laser. By the way, did you know that the center channel is essentially matrixed? It's still a discreet channel (in effect) because it a SAE in the soundtracks. I'm still trying to go easy on you here. I've owned many systems, even an early 3 channel with matrixed rears and no center. From a purist POV no system has a purely and discreetly transmitted center or center rear. If you only read about this lightly, as clearly you have, it's hard for you to know what's what. But Dolby Pro logic/DD derived 5 channels (not DD) ANALOG, SAE. Here's what was available with an ordinary pro logic processor...and a laser disc: From the Laser Disc FAQ NTSC discs: 2 analog channels (last discs like this were made in the 80's) 2 analog channels + 2 uncompressed digital channels 1 analog channel + 2 uncompressed digital channels + 5.1 Dolby Digital channels 2 analog channels + 5.1 DTS channels Hope this helps. Notice how the word "matrix" keeps popping up...
Matrix is how the center channel is also derived. Based on how films are recorded you could argue that after two or four tacks, all are Matrixed. Doesn' t mean much. 5.1 is not 6.1. RB |
