Many seem to think that a quick conversation on 16 is OK because it
won't disturb the other 3000 people monitoring.

Hmmmm. All of my friend are using those little family FRS radios. I have two
pairs of Cobra units that get great range on the water. They were cheap, less
than 50 bucks for all four (14 channels) and have lasted two seasons. If one
falls overboard...no big deal. I hear some of the better units get really
substancial range

You may not have heard it. Sometimes the emergency is

For several years, channel 9 was used in some areas to establish
communications. The hope
was that this would leave 16 free for emergencies. The experiment was
abandoned because
it reduced the number of vessels monitoring Channel 16.

I see. This past season I heard the CG asking to keep 16 cleared at all

times,

generally on weekends. No emergency situation was taking place. I heard

this

message on numerous occasions, read live.
