I have a Furuno, which I bought a couple of years ago. IMHO, there is
nothing wrong with the JRC radars. I have a very strong suspicion that some
of the other posters are comparing the cheapest JRC with slightly more
up-market models from other manufacturers.

I believe that JRC have been making professional radars for a long time.
They have been making small radars for the leisure market for many years,
but they have not been sold under their own name.

From the description of your intended use, I cannot see anything wrong with
the JRC.

There are three main features that you need to look at in a radar.
1. Resolution. This the ability of the radar to "see" small objects. The
bigger the antenna, the smaller the beamwith, and the better the
resolution. (Nothing to do with "Screen resolution".)

2. Display quality. (Self explanatory - I think)

3. Power consumption. Actually, these days you have little control over
this. It will be a function of the two preceeding points.
The "scan every 5 minutes" function is probably useful. However, in
practise, I leave the unit in stand-by, and do a manual scan every so
often.

Other things to (maybe) consider a-
Ability to display NMEA data, if your instruments are NMEA compatible.
GPS chart plotter.

Once you get your radar, you need to play with it in good visibility to get
to know it.

Now there you go agin. I thought you understood that you can't pick up a
shore line with radar... Your brain has gone to mush!

| | I though JRC was a well known brand. I see that logo on a lot of
radomes.

something
| basic
| | for occasional use in fog, and at night, so I don't get run over by a
| ferry or
| | tanker. I sail mostly in the Long Island Sound.
|
| The JRC will suit your intended usage. The reason you see so many JRCs
is
| because they are cheap. They are also newcomers on the radar scene by
| comparison to other brands. Furuno for instance has been around a lot
| longer. You'll see them on the better equiped boats. If you are
comfortable
| sailing around New York with the K-Mart of radars where everyone is
judged

|
|
| I don't sail around New York very much, and I am not looking to be
judged on
| toys. I have a practical need for a basic radar unit that will help me
when
| there is fog, and at night. It's not really a toy. Are JRC radars really
so bad?
| They have a full line, and not all of them are exactly low cost units.
Furuno
| also seems to have a range of units starting about as cheap as JRC.
Overall, I
| don't see JRC as being especially cheap compared to Furuno or others.
|
| When I read the literature from the manufacturers, they all seem to be
geared
| for how well they work for fast boats, which says to me, that maybe
there is a
| radar unit that is especially geared to slow (sail) boats, that trades
speed for
| lower power consumption.
|
| Forgetting price, for a moment, can you tell me about comparative
quality, and

Have that on my Furuno and a guard zone alarm that will wake you from a
coma! It picked up a low flying Float Plane once in the fog... talk about
panic when you see the speed of approach!

They were the manufacturer for Raytheon. Raytheon had a problem with
them(Don't know what) and went elsewhere. They continued manufacturing under
their own name. So they have been in the radar market for a while, just
under a different name.

I don't believe JRC is a newcomer. They were building pro radars for quite

a
while, and also have some nicer higher end units.
Calling it the K-Mart of radars is a bit extreme. It's fine for lite use,

which
is what most of us face.

I don't think they made all the Ray units, but they did make the first small LCD radar for Ray. The
screen display wasn't very good. The new Raymarine stuff is much better.

FWIW. I had a Raytheon 10XX on my last boat, and a SL 70 on the new one; I've been happy with both.
A nice Ray feature is that it plugs into Seatalk and displays a loot of info on the screen.

Let's Keep Sight on what's key here!

Mooron claimed JRC was "new" to the market and was wrong.
And for the 35463rd time, I was right.

Thank you! Spin it, baby!

Wrong again.... JRC hasn't to my knowledge provided a consumer grade radar
unit for pleasure craft until 1998.

Can you prove otherwise? I didn't think so Bob!

You stand corrected as usual.

That would have been a stationary hazard to navigation just outside a harbor
on a nice breezy day with it's prop fouled... once again!
