Anyone use these? Looking for a way to spend some west marine gift certificates... Had a play with one during the dinghy course last year. It had modes to show current speed, highest speed and maybe some sort of running average. I had my reservations about the design - the fan struck me as something that could get clogged up with, say, pocket fluff. I felt that the buttons were rather small - fine when standing on the pier, but maybe too fiddly when cold and wet. I don't remember if it had a light. My impression was that it was a neat little gadget, and fairly desirable on that level, but I'm not sure that I'd want to rush out and buy one. I always got a feel for the wind by facing into it and listening for the rushing sound past my ears. ... and I have everything else I need! Except for Nightvision...but that's coming for Xmas. How about a good quality sailing knife? Small hand-bearing compass? If you have everything else, then you might as well go for it, but have a look at the various designs and try to assess their practicality in a wide range of conditions. -- Wally www.makearatherlonglinkthattakesyounowhere.com Things are always clearer in the cold, post-upload light. |

I've got a great bearing compass, plus a cheap davis model that was NIB on the boat. As for knives...I have several, including one made with a custom whale bone handle...made for me as a present from antique bone. RB |

he higher the wind speed the higher the ball goes up the tube. Not
much to go wrong and it doesn't need batteries. I'll bet none of your sailing friends have one of those. :o) One of my racing buddies has one of those. It sort of works. RB |

I was meaning the type that has a shackle key and spike as well as the blade. I notice that the more expensive Silva Windwatch also has a barometer in it, complete with a 16 hour memory which displays the readings as some sort of graph or histogram - that could be interesting if one is into meteorology while cruising. Oh, I dunno, he could hammer the marlin spike into the side of the boat and loop a bit of wire through the shackle key - then he could hang the display case for the ornamental whalebone one on it... -- Wally www.makearatherlonglinkthattakesyounowhere.com Things are always clearer in the cold, post-upload light. |

BTW..... whale bone is very soft. Almost brittle, porous and won't stand up
to use. It's decorative. I use a Jag switchblade aboard the boat. I like the switchblades which open quick and one handed. Wish someone would make one with the spike! RB |

"gimme all your anchors or I'll splice you to the mainbrace" Jokes asside, the switchblade, well made, is a great boat knife if you don't want a fixed blade diving knife which I also keep handy. A true sailing version would be a great item, though not legal in NY I'm afraid. I've yet to see a sailing knife that could be easily open with one hand. The shackle key is even harder to open! RB |

Well I haven't master it...but I can do it along with the rest of the basic knots and a few nice grabage knots I'm fond of. Tell me Mooron...do you EVER win anything? Bwahahahaha! RB |
