Conrad Johnson stuff is fine for music especially if you have pristine vinyl
and a quality turntable. For home theater it's not only a poor performer but

Why would one need an analogue pre-amp when dealing with a digital data
stream?

do you need tube type

Have you ever heard T2 or Chicago through tube based amps, while using a CJ 2ch
preamp to stage the LR channels?
How about older 1 or 2ch (All that Jazz, Conan or Casablanca for example) which
are rescued by such gear? In fact, ABS in LI ran a great demo with an old
Sonograph mono block tube stage just for the center channel and it was amazing.
Dialogue sounded far more natural an less bright.
I also run Rotel amps 1075 and 1080 with the PW2200 sub, which is better for
modern recordings.
You'd know more if you tried different gear, as I do. Loco is clearly working
off old issues of Stereophile, while running ancient Nad gear!

Hooooh ahhh!

I just don't feel the need to use tube gear to reproduce explosions and car
crashes. As far as a tube amp for center channel dialog goes ...... get a
grip.

That's very nice Bob, I've heard a good many bands, Chicago included,
with the
original tube amps, (as in I was at a live concert), I know what tube
amps sound
like, I'm not going to get into a discussion regarding their merits and
drawbacks.

The question was "why do need a tube type analogue preamp with a digital
data stream?", could
you address that issue please?

Oh, BTW, would you mind terribly dropping the charming schoolboy
rhetoric?

Thanks for the enlightenment MC, nothing like a whopping great huge
chunk
of third harmonic distortion to "warm up" the sound. Wonder what the
slew rate
of one of those CJs is?

I just did. Chicago aint the band, it's the movie. You are aware of analogue
outs, yes? You can switch between them and a D-Link. As I've found out, it can
work wonders. I especially find it helpful on older films.

let me see if I've got this right, you want the tube amp to make the
soundtrack
sound better to your ears?

Deliberately introducing distortion is a perfectly valid artistic tool
that I certainly
have no problem with, modern music would not exist without it.

However if you are attempting to achieve a rendition that modifies the
artists', then
you are not truly seeking "HI-FI", but rather creating something new
and, hopefully, pleasing
to your ears. I guess it depends on your objectives.

Thinking further, if you wanted to duplicate the sound in the old movie
theatres, then tube would
be the way to go indeed, but this hardly applies to "Chicago" (the film,
sorry for the missunderstanding
but when I think of Chicago, movies do not come to mind, guess I'm
dating myself)

Cheers

Exactly, which is why multiple amps and preamps are common in better systems.

GW,

That dump, as you called it, is an apartment in Kew Gardens, NYC under
City rent control. I don't believe it is equipped with a wine cellar for
fine expense wines.

Nutsy has declared he sails a "Dry Ship", so I can't figure why he would
be carrying and expense wine. He doesn't have a controlled weather area
on "Derelict",so if he is transporting a expense wine back and forth and
storing it on the boat it isn't worth it's purchase price.

I'm sure Vito could match it with a Gallon on Swiss Colony!

Then, we must consider that Nutsy doesn't have any salary and matching
that salary, Swiss Colony would do the job G

So, I think I'll have a little "Jacques Cardin", Imported and bottled in
New Rochelle by Sidney Frank Importing Co. I know the single shot will
be worth more than Nutsy's Weekly Salary :^)

So; "I'll Drink My Night Cap, as the Doctor Ordered and Bid Good Night
to you NUTSY"

Ole Thom
