Titanium hull?
Check out Scientific American (Oct 2003) article "Alchemy of a
Supermetal" A new process for wresting pure titanium from ore may soon make the affordable titanium hull and other sailboat components a reality. The pure form of the ninth most common element on earth is expensive now only because of the chemical reduction process currently used to extract it. A few bright metallurgists at Cambridge have found a significantly easier way to produce it. The challenge now is to produce it in commercial volume. Might be worth investing. Scout |

Katy, you may want to sell them before these guys perfect their system
and titanium products fall into the price range of pvc (ok, maybe aluminum). But consider that there may be as much as 663 sextillion metric tons of it on the planet. Naturally, I can't put a price on the sentimental value of parts you've collected, but I can't imagine they are linked to your most pleasurable memories, lol. Whatever the process, it doesn't seem likely that titanium will ever be
cheaper than aluminum and never mind how difficult it is to work with. Aluminum sailboats are so expensive that only the wealthy can afford them now. Still, it could be just the thing for high dollar ocean racers. There might be some advantage over the carbon fibre composites now used in the open 60's, even if they didn't build an entire hull out of it. "Scout" wrote in message ... U.K. Defense Ministry and U.S. Government for starters.
It is *currently* difficult to weld, but the welding industry has overcome similar challenges in the past. Success of the Cambridge process would mean a profuse supply of Titanium. Abundance of any resource tends to lead to creative ways of using it. Scout. JAXAshby wrote: buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut it **IS* miserably difficult to weld, so who cares. |

I sure cannot figure out why some people insist on such heavy,

Bottom line is nothing beats plain old fiberglass with polyester resin when it comes to strength, longevity and maintenance free operation. S.Simon "Joe" wrote in message om... Steel? Irish? Yeah Steel rivits annealed and made in Belfast and applied to the hull at Harland & Woff Shipyard in Belfast Ireland. Thats the place where the Titanic was made BTW. The steel hull plates where made by D. Colville & Co from Scotland. Most experts think the rivits failed at the head loads, allowing seams to rip open on the Titanics hull. Many think the same flawed riviting might have doomed the HMS Hood. Joe MSV RedCloud Still made of the finest British Steel & Monel money could buy. Cheers MC Joe wrote: Vito wrote in message ...
