possibly a new boat
I'm looking at a mid-1960s Jensen Cal 28. Seems to be in great
shape. Inboard diesel (one cylinder seems to be quiet and doesn't smoke with minimal vibration - for a one-banger), two jibs, main in good shape, standard electronics (nothing fancy), interior is newly painted, hull appears clean, standing rigging looks fine. Comes with a spinaker and pole, anchor (not chrome unfortunately), has a 2-burner propane stove, teak inside seems to be in decent shape, mostly. It's a flat top (no raised cabin). Two deficits that I can see... it has an illegal head, so that has to get changed... it has a self-tacking jib mechanism. Looks ugly, can't imagine why I would want it set up like that. I can get it for $6K and they'll split the haulout and survey with me. They were asking $9K. I'm going to do a sea trial hopefully soon. Jonathan |

Have you written up a list of everything you'd want to upgrade and how much it would cost? New blocks, new running rigging, new batteries (what sort of charger does it have?), new sails? Unless the standing rigging has been renewed in the past ten years, I'd count on doing that too. $9K this boat is insane in the current market... $6K doesn't sound like such a bargain, given what you say about the boat. What kind of sailing do you want to do? Mostly daysailing? I'd opt for a
smaller but newer design for the same money. A mid eighties 25 footer would be fine for a few weekends out once in a while and would be much more fun to sail. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" Trains are a winter sport |

Why do you say that? They commonly go for $10K.

You know nothing about boats, so shut the **** up.

Right now, sailing on the SF bay. However, this is a big enough
and sturdy enough boat to deal with coastal Pacific weather, so I'll probably end up taking it down or up the coast.. possibly do the Baja Ha-Ha at some point. The minimum size for the latter is 27'. Why do you say "much more fun to sail"? I'm currently sailing a 20' Cal, which *is* fun, but a bit small for the north bay. "SAIL LOCO" wrote in message ... What kind of sailing do you want to do? I'm going to take her out early next week and see how she sails. Is it one of those old 1960's self-tackers? I agree, you don't want that. Yep... at least it comes off easily. :-) I can get it for $6K and they'll split the haulout and survey with me. They were asking $9K. I'm going to do a sea trial hopefully soon. I haven't got a complete list yet, but besides the new head, I'd imagine that I'd want to replace the winches (two). Blocks are fine.. they look new, but the survey should reveal any defects in the rigging or at least a recommendation. That might be a way to lower the price. I think I'll also have to replace the bats. I have an uninstalled shore power set up that I haven't used, so I could use that. I believe it doesn't have a shore power connection right now. I'm also concerned about the effectiveness of the alternator, but I'll know more after a bit more investigation. a 20' Cal, which *is* fun, but a bit small for the north bay. Didn't know where you were or what your plans were. Everytime I've been to SF Bay everybody had 2 reefs in. I would imagine you could sail a full keeled tank out there and it would be fun. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" Trains are a winter sport |

Jon,
I guess you know that, in its day, that wasa real speed burner. A lot of racing fleets ( wooden racing boat) Wouldn't allow them to race (Fibre Glass) They were excluded. They changed racing That said, They are pretty long in the tooth. A thing to look for is leakage on the joint of the flat top two the hull. This was done in the early days. There was still a lot to learn about fibre glass. If my memory serves me the seam was hidden under a rather wide trim check for water damage. They were good sailing boat. They are well past their time but still fair sailors It will be a big brother for your 20! If you find water sign and point it out, I bet the price could be forced lower Ole Thom |

With a full keeled tank, I only need one reef. :-)

Thanks Thom!
All I get from current owners is lots a praise. I don't know if I can swing keeping both boats. She who must be obeyed may not go for it. :-) "Thom Stewart" wrote in message ...
