I'm beginning to get it now.
You do ring your sailmaker and get him to come down and go for a sail
in a variety of conditions so he can see jus how you sail and design a
nice set of cruising sails tailored to your particular way of sailing.
He makes all the right noises, drinks your beer, makes a few notes,
accepts your offer to dinner, then delivers the sails in a couple of
weeks.
Of course he goes for a sail, drinks your beers, makes some more
notes, accepts your offer to dinner and humbly accepts your praise on
how well the sails suit your boat and driving style.

Thing is Billy, the notes he was taking were so he'd remember your
comments.
He didn't want to forget one single word you said when he gets back to
the loft and the whole bunch sit around laughing their heads off at
the sucker they just reeled in!!!
Then they'll get back to the computer and bring up the templates for
the next set of "custom" sails, lay the cloth out on the table, turn
on the air and watch the plotter mark it up.

I made my sailmaker come down to my boat three times and we had many phone
calls and emails to go over details. He measured my rig completely and we
discussed the type of sailing I do. When the sails were done he fitted them
and had to take them back because the reefing pulls were on the wrong side for
the Dutchman. We went over the ways in which my sails differed from the stock
sails delivered on an IP, a dedicated cruising boat. Details in a cruising
sail matter also, and you gotta make sure you get what you want.

Skitch, most sailmakers will come down to a boat if the owner wants, but the
"norm" is computer template sails for most. Sailing is dominated by Catalinas,
hunters and other popular boats that rarely get a visit from a loft. Ask Mark
at Doyle or Bill and UK how many boats he visits. They couldn't make money
unless they had a giant cut-and-ship business.

Maybe his sailmaker build big baggy sails so Billy can reach all those
downwind ports quickly.

I could save Billy Jane a small fortune on sails, but then what would he do
with them?

What do you do with your sails other than flap the wind-up
jib to death while motoring while you keep the sail cover on
the mainsail like you keep the cover on your compass.
Can't wear out that mainsail by using it now can we?

Now ain't that odd. I ordered an off the shelf with 3 reef points. They said
they had the template and I confirmed the measurements via fax. I sent the
sail back 3 times. The loft finally flew a rep up from Vancouver to
Yellowknife and found out their measurements were not correct. I did feel
sorry for the guy and arranged for him to meet some other people who were
considering buying new sails. He measured and discussed their specifics with
them and returned with orders for a few other sails. Mine arrived again and
fit. They decided to send a rep up every year after that.

Thanks for making my point, mooron. If I had a boat like yours I'd INSIST on a
visit from a loft. It's not a well known rig. You see, that's why I mentioned
the Catalina and Hunters.
You were exceedingly dumb to try to mail order sails for your boat.
