Nice self steering system. I balanced out the boat and thought I
engaged the autopilot and for over 8 hours stayed on course then I
noticed that I forgot to turn the autopilot on. :0)

1992 or 1993, I think. You can follow the whole squareboat design
controversy in outline (with references back to the 20s-30s) in
back issues of WoodenBoat.

More seriously, I don't think that's a good way to rig a safety line.

I would have placed it closer to the end so it could be easily slipped
off if necessary.

Nagnagnag. Look closer. For the very reason you say, it's
figure-8ed on the ends of the cockpit seat slats, and not around
a cleat. One flick of a hand and it's free instantly. Why? there
are 100-200m long fishing nets in the oddest of places, and their
flags at one end are often blown away, and the twin buoys at the
other may be loggy, so one can be nearly on top of the bolt line
before seeing it, and need to do some rapid evasion. (Forget
other boats, hardly anyone ventures onto the main lake body other
than in the big races).
