LOL........... I told you you were living in the past. In the mid-60s engineers 3 years out of school easily earned over $10,000/yr. A nicely furnished apt fronting on a heated pool, with carport, cost $85/mo utilities included, or buy a new house for a year's pay. MGBs cost $2995, a well appointed vette $3500, XKEs or Cobras (the real ones) $5000 and Ferraris $10 to 12,500 depending on model. Gas was two bits a gallon and Jet Setters were whining that the "American peasant" had had it too good for too long!! Don't like sport cars? Fine. You could buy a Renault Dauphin, a nice little 4dr that seated 4 in comfort and got 35MPG, for $1600 or a well optioned US V8 for $2500. A '68 HO GTO could just pick its left front tire off the ground headed for a 12-second 1/4 mile, and it cost under $4000! Of course it'd only do 130 but ... Now we got cars that go over 200, but they cost over $200,000 too, and I don't know many "American peasants" in their mid-20s who can afford one. Ain't progress grand? |
