Default I'm Honored!

Early in my flying career I used to fly a charter for a small outfit from
Boston to Bangor.

I flew a Beechcraft 1900 Red Tag special. The only thing that wasn't red
tagged on this beast were the holes in the instrument panel where stuff used
to be.

One flight in late fall was a make or break one. I was flying a wealthy-well
connected poltical family up to Bangor. After takeoff they closed Boston and
the weather was bad in Bangor. I flew IFR the whole way, I was in the left
seat. I couldn't fly above the weather as I used to in my F-4 in the Corps.

After a strenuous flight we got to Bangor. The airport was about to close,
visibility zero. I had them turn up the runway lights to full brightness,
but it didn't help. I aligned the localizer and glideslope and took her in.
The tower called me off and said to come around. I was off in the approach,
yet the localizer said dead nuts on.

"What's going on?", I thought. Then I figured it out. On approach the
crosswind was left to right with blowing freezing rain. The ice must have
built up on the right side of the localizer antenna on the ground and
deflected the beam!

I quickly made a few mental calculations, came around and approached with
the locailzer reading 15 degrees right. When I could see the runway as I
touched down, I was right on centerline. Additionally I greased the landing!

Word quickly spread about my amazing approach, saving the lives of a
noteworthy American political family. The Senator himself was greatly
impressed, the nephew said he wanted to be a pilot like me. The good Senator
suggested naming an airport after me, but he couldn't do it in reality. So
instead, he had the three letter airport code changed in my honor. The
airport is Jacksonville, FL. The code is now JAX - named for me!

So you all ask, "what has this to do with ole Bertie?". Well, his piloting
skills were also made note of. They also changed a three letter code of an
airport to honor his level of piloting skill. The airport is Soiux City
Iowa, the code is - SUX.
