No, Ganzy, not Ted Danson!

You have 250K for a boat, for live aboard, day sailing and several long cruises
each summer or year-round. You want a boat that performs, doesn't suffer from
silly design trends and is easy to care for. You also want a boat that can be
sold without a crushing loss...because every boat is a stepping stone...and
then you're dead.
New or used, what would you buy? You don't have to spend the whole 250K.

Oyster 55, Hylas 54, or an older Kanter aluminum. Cost a little more, but just
amortize it over a longer time in the S Pacific or Med. Definitely used - let
someone else work out the bugs and take the initial depreciation hit.

So which boat do you think gives more performance and space and quality for the money (new
boats please)? She can be single handed up to 12-13 knots with only 540 feet of plain
sail. She has three state rooms, the saloon seats 8 for dinner. 6'3" headroom
throughout. The cockpit is huge and dry, and you can play volleyball on the bow. And I
only pay for a 36 footer in the yard!

And the new centerboard version looks like it screams upwind!

A lot of smaller Hylases are in charter - that is where Queen Long got its
start, but the 54 is not a charter boat. Several 54s are on long range cruises
and are getting nothing but raves. Its a lot of boat for the money.

Swan 441

That's not the game, Katy. Your Elite's a fine little boat, but hardly ideal
for liveaboard and long range cruising. Spend some of the 250K. What would you
get? Imagine you DON'T have a boat.

Well, I'm actually past the pumps, so my being there doesn't prevent folks from filling.
But when I'm gone, they have an extra 50 feet to stash boats. The real hectic time is 6AM
when the fishing crowd is topping off.

I try to be philosophical when I come back, since I never know what obstacles there will
be. The best was when I had to squeeze between the boat the city's special ops chief
lives in, while he was having a staff meeting onboard, and the State Police's new $250,000
interceptor (it can be dropped from a helicopter and do 50 knots in a 6 foot chop) - I
stuck it so good they were convinced I had thrusters!

Then again I could spend six months building a modified
three-piece schooner (as a one-piece and other minor
alteration). GOing on when I last costed it, it would now be
about $A 100K for the fifty-footer..so that would leave me nearly
$A 400K, which would be enough for at least a $A 20K income from
that alone, which is more than the married-couple pension.

However, a point: Bill mcKibben and his wife, who commissioned
and built the original design, discovered they'd "overboated"
themselves, a function it seems of many who finally step up to
their "dreamboat". I'll leave other posters to point to the most
famous example.

Bill McKibben's boat "Saghali" at
http://www.boatdesign.com/jumps/mckib/Page.html
I particularly like the "low tide" shot, reminiscent of the
Bobsprit school of coastal pilotage, except in this case it was
obviously intentional (stern to shore).

While you're there, the "Black Skimmer" is one of the most
elegant simple designs of the 20th C, up there with Meadow Lark
and Pete CUllers "Old GLory" ketch
