You comment "if one searched in the right direction..." requires a "Heading" to be useful. A little searching in the right direction should satisfy your curiosity, if you have any. By the way in my younger US Navy days, I did fight several fires resulting from not cleaning/clearing "Bilges", to say nothing of retrieving several "Fair Weather Sailors" & their boats.
