The marinas' chickens . . . are comin' home . . . to rrroost!

Serves the greedy marina operator right. They've been abusing the public for
too many years with their exorbitant prices. (Around here, upwards of 1,000
dollars a month for a slip in what amounts to floating travel trailer park
full of broken down, go nowhere vessels. The operators should have seen the
handwriting on the wall but they've been lulled into a false sense of
security because the demand, heretofore, has outstripped the supply of wet
slips and moorings. Foolish people with more money to spend on highway
robbery than sense. No more! Money is now in short supply and will become
more so as the economy spirals into depression.

These fool *businessmen*, rather than scale back the cost of slips and
moorings, would rather they sit there empty. Duh! They've forgotten the
basic law of supply and demand. When demand goes down you just can't expect
to keep charging confiscatory rates. Letting a good percentage of your slips
and moorings sit empty and then spending your time complaining about it
indicates that you have not one iota of business acumen.

Take your medicine - go bankrupt rather than adjust your rates and lower
your overhead. There's a good little liberal wankstain!

I feel badly for the poor guy. But . . .

Why do people not anticipate this kind of thing and prepare for it? Why do
people keep falling for the obviously false, liberal claptrap that a knight
in shining, government armor is going to gallop out of the sunrise and
rescue them from every eventuality, foreseen and unforeseen?

Why is it a marina in hurricane country didn't have a plan that included
rebuilding after a hurricane wiped them out? When did it ever get to the
point where there was nothing but despair leading to a suicide? Where was
the financial cushion? Why is a newspaper article furthering the insanity
and acting like it was all somebody else's fault. Griping that government
help isn't timely or enough. Worse still is the question: "Why do people
reading that propaganda nod their heads in agreement?" It's a barometer
into the soul of a soulless liberal society.

For how many years did the Silvers own and operate the marina? 10? 15? 20?
Unless they just recently purchased the marina, why did they not set aside a
percentage of earnings annually in a rebuilding kitty? Why did they neglect
having a contingency plan? And, if they just recently purchased it why did
they wipe out most of their working capital so there was nothing left in the
kitty for eventualities like hurricanes? Did they not have insurance of some
sort? Where was their business plan? In hurricane country partial or total
destruction it's a matter of when, not if.

It sounds like they embraced the liberal lie that big brother would come to
their rescue. How many times are people going to see this is rarely the case
before they smarten up and become responsible for taking care of their own?
Texan's, in particular, seem to like to brag about how they are so ruggedly
independent and manly. While I've not seen the level of whining as was and
still is the case in New Orleans - an almost totally liberal bastion - there
is still an embarrassing level of whining in the Galveston area where folks
pride themselves on being personally responsible and independent.

As long as people believe government is their friend and helpmate they are
living a lie. You have but two real friends in this life - the Good Lord and
His gifts to you. Any real man realizes this truth and acts accordingly. For
help of a critical nature look first to the Lord, then yourself, your
friends and your church in that order. Government does not appear anywhere
on the list.

Wake up, people!

I've only meet mr Silvers a few times.
Before the housing bust he was looking for investors to build a high
rise like the hundred seen on the coast of Florida. Infact Florida
builders were snapping up water front property here at as high as 30
million an acre. I feel sorry for the kids.

Why he or she expected FEMA or the SBA to help is beyond me. They
passed out all the free money, generators, mobile homes, trailers,
credit cards, MRE's, rent checks, and aid to the Katrina "Victims".

Next hurricane here the Governer will request that we all make
cardboard help signs, line up at the astrodome and act like victims
too, if we expect to be treated fairly by the people passing out govt
cheese.

1000 bucks a mo for slip rentals in Florida? Does that come with a
jar of Vasaline?

Frankly, I don't see 99% of boats on the market right now as a
"bargain" unless you have very limited sailing plans.

First of all, most boats are mass-produced dockominiums that don't
sail all that well and are not designed or equipped for serious
sailing or cruising. They're nice for drinking beer at the dock, so if
that's what you wanna do, then you can get a good deal.

2nd, most boats on the 2nd-hand market are badly neglected. Very few
are reasonably equipped for anything other than mild weather (see #1
above) and all will need skilled work plus at least a few BOAT unit$
for repair, maintenance, upgrades etc. Many have been neglected to the
point of needing major work.

When I was boat-shopping this past spring, it was a buyer's market
although not as much so as now; and of the boat within the size & type
range I was looking at, I didn't see a single one I considered a
bargain. Most I would not have accepted if offered to me for free.

But then, I'm kinda picky. YMMV

Ericsons are pretty good boats, but even at serious discount you will
probably sink more $$ into it than you'll ever get out, and that's not
putting a dollar value on your time & work. Remember, when good times
come again, it will most likely still be a buyer's market and the boat
will be older yet. So, pick a boat you really really like and will
find rewarding to own & sail. Then it will be worth the work & effort
you put into it.

Hi Joe,

Things are pretty good here for the most part. No real big unemployment
problems since most of those who lost their jobs went back to Mexico. A good
number of foreclosures on houses but the small investor is locked out
because lenders have a limit on the number of houses you can have mortgaged.
Gas is under $2.00, food and ammunition prices are dropping so it's not all
gloom and doom. I plan on getting down your way in a few weeks to see my old
yacht, its new owner and sniff around for another fine addition to the
fleet.

I hope you are getting a new RedCloud II going, it's people like you that
make America great - independent, self reliant people that never give up on
their vision.

That's what sailing and for the most part, the American way of life has
become. Look at Robbie - tricked out flimsy racer for daysails, a turbo
coupe for grocery runs. Image sells but doesn't make up for lack of
character

2nd, most boats on the 2nd-hand market are badly neglected. Very few

This begs the question: are you realistic?

But then, I'm kinda picky. YMMV

Ericsons are pretty good boats, but even at serious discount you will

I think that is what most people do. The problem is you don't like 99%
of boats and other people may like 20% or 50% of boats

If people wait until the end of next summer then they'll see the
bargains

Since the Democratic controlled Congress and the future administration
will be and are saddling our children with massive debt, I doubt boats will
be in the game plan for many in decades to come. There will be no rebound
for boats. Yachts will become what they once were - toys for the very, very
wealthy.

Perhaps, but only time will tell.

What concerns me is he's too full of pride. I have yet to read where he
admits he screwed up royally in losing Red Cloud unnecessarily. I fear that
until and unless he steps back and takes a realistic appraisal of the whys
and wherefores he's doomed to continue his "bad luck." Part of being a man
is to admit one's mistakes and not continue to always blame them on fate or
bad luck. Until one can admit a mistake one will never be able to correct a
mistake or forestall the same thing happening in the future.

"Charles Momsen" wrote:

Maybe not, but they bring a lot of needless frustration & difficulty
to the 99%

For example, look at the large number of 'production boats' that have
winches in unworkable locations. Can the boat be sailed in anything
but a drifter without using the winches? No.

Another example... mooring cleats. Undersized, not fastened or bedded
or backed properly. Guaranteed heaache to use, a safety issue, a
maintenance issue... the builders & sellers assume that the buyers are
idiots.

I could go on & on & on....

Why are 99% of boats on the market designed & built to be sold to
idiots? It's not that the buyers *are* idiots, it's that most want a
boat really badly and there's nothing else to choose from.

2nd, most boats on the 2nd-hand market are badly neglected.

Most boats? What is your sample size for this conclusion?

At least a couple of hundred. I go to a lot of different marinas &
sailing clubs and have a habit of taking a look around at each... heck
there are at least 60 boats for sale in the 5 marinas and 2 sailing
clubs that I go to regularly (right in our area). It doesn't take a
genius so see frayed lines, corroded fittings, etc etc on almost all
the ones with 'for sale' signs... heck it's nothing special, close to
50% of all the boats I see are prety badly neglected. Probably at
least 50% of the boats in these places have been sailed less than 10
times in the past 5 years.

..... So, pick a boat you really really like and will
find rewarding to own & sail. Then it will be worth the work & effort
you put into it.

I think that is what most people do. The problem is you don't like 99%
of boats and other people may like 20% or 50% of boats

Prob'ly right.

Like I said, I'm picky! Either that or I'm spoiled, having owned a
series of boats & dogs that were far above the average.

Since the Democratic controlled Congress and the future administration
will be and are saddling our children with massive debt, I doubt boats will
be in the game plan for many in decades to come. There will be no rebound
for boats. Yachts will become what they once were - toys for the very, very
wealthy.

And you can be sure it's all the Democrats fault.... not a single
Republican has any share of the blame!

Isn't democracy just awful, the way you brilliant & perfect people

Frankly, I don't see 99% of boats on the market right now as a
"bargain" unless you have very limited sailing plans.

"Charles Momsen" wrote:
But Doug, mass produced boats are not marketed for the slim 1%

Maybe not, but they bring a lot of needless frustration & difficulty
to the 99%

Maybe not so. Maybe those people just don't care.

For example, look at the large number of 'production boats' that have
winches in unworkable locations. Can the boat be sailed in anything
but a drifter without using the winches? No.

Another example... mooring cleats. Undersized, not fastened or bedded
or backed properly. Guaranteed heaache to use, a safety issue, a
maintenance issue... the builders & sellers assume that the buyers are
idiots.

I could go on & on & on....

It's costly to build a good boat and most people can't afford them. If one
wants to sell boats to the masses it appears corners must be cut.

Why are 99% of boats on the market designed & built to be sold to
idiots? It's not that the buyers *are* idiots, it's that most want a
boat really badly and there's nothing else to choose from.

They can try to buy a good boat, but it might be out of their means.

Name 5 great blue water cruisers 30 feet or more for less than 100K new.
Less than 150K. Less than 200K. Less than 250K.

Off all the boats sold, what percentage is over 100K?

Doug, all fittings corrode and lines do fray. If it's for sale the owner may
not want to sink money and effort into new lines or removing corrosion. The
bright side (no pun intended) is that half of the boats are low mileage. I
don't think a sample of 200-300 boats is enough to make conclusions for all
boats. But it is true that most of the boats for sale you have seen are
badly neglected. Can you say the same for boats you have seen that are not
for sale? For the most part I think people sell their boats because they
have lost interest in them.

..... So, pick a boat you really really like and will
find rewarding to own & sail. Then it will be worth the work & effort
you put into it.

I think that is what most people do. The problem is you don't like
99%
of boats and other people may like 20% or 50% of boats

Prob'ly right.

Like I said, I'm picky! Either that or I'm spoiled, having owned a
series of boats & dogs that were far above the average.

Would you say that Hunter you had was far above average? Was it that way
from the factory or did you make it above average?

Since the Democratic controlled Congress and the future
administration
will be and are saddling our children with massive debt, I doubt boats
will
be in the game plan for many in decades to come. There will be no rebound
for boats. Yachts will become what they once were - toys for the very,
very
wealthy.

And you can be sure it's all the Democrats fault.... not a single
Republican has any share of the blame!

Blame them too if you like. I'm simply holding the Democrats to their word.
They were going to get us out of Iraq. Remember pay-go? Bush's failed
policies? I do.

Isn't democracy just awful, the way you brilliant & perfect people
have to suffer the voting mistakes of the average folk?

It's not as bad as the marketplace where you brilliant and perfectly
knowledgeable sailors have to suffer the consequences of mass marketed boats
for idiots.

It's a shame
that President Bush & Vice President Cheney didn't just outlaw the
Democratic Party back when they had full control. Think what the
country would be like if they'd put all those libby-rulls in re-
education camps!

FYI: I'm not a Republican and it's more fun to wind the liberals up. BTW, do
you still think the Fed is doing a great job?

Hi Joe,

Things are pretty good here for the most part. No real big unemployment
problems since most of those who lost their jobs went back to Mexico. A
good number of foreclosures on houses but the small investor is locked
out because lenders have a limit on the number of houses you can have
mortgaged. Gas is under $2.00, food and ammunition prices are dropping
so it's not all gloom and doom. I plan on getting down your way in a
few weeks to see my old yacht, its new owner and sniff around for
another fine addition to the fleet.

I hope you are getting a new RedCloud II going, it's people like you
that make America great - independent, self reliant people that never
give up on their vision.

Partially true but a vision will not be realized without hard work and
competent action. Although Joe has demonstrated he does not fear hard
work it is the competence angle upon which he has yet to get a firm
grip.

Wilbur Hubbard

Right you are Wilbur and there's also luck, both good and bad. I believe
Joe has all it takes and more to be successful.

Perhaps, but only time will tell.

What concerns me is he's too full of pride. I have yet to read where he
admits he screwed up royally in losing Red Cloud unnecessarily. I fear
that until and unless he steps back and takes a realistic appraisal of the
whys and wherefores he's doomed to continue his "bad luck." Part of being
a man is to admit one's mistakes and not continue to always blame them on
fate or bad luck. Until one can admit a mistake one will never be able to
correct a mistake or forestall the same thing happening in the future.

That's a true concern and wise advice. I think Joe has what it takes.

We still have a large contigent of Mexicans and since the storm a
influx of Floridians here to earn money picking up trash and fixing
things. They are easy to spot as they drive slow with one turn signal
on

A good

They say here there are a run on AR's, you can't find a Bushmaster is
the state.
Ammos gone up a bit, some times it's better to shop on-line or hit the
gun show.

I plan on getting down your way in a few weeks to see my old
yacht, its new owner and sniff around for another fine addition to the
fleet.

Lots of boats to be had here, bring an empty trailor. If you need any
assistance let me know.

I feel badly for the poor guy. But . . .

Why do people not anticipate this kind of thing and prepare for it? Why do
people keep falling for the obviously false, liberal claptrap that a
knight
in shining, government armor is going to gallop out of the sunrise and
rescue them from every eventuality, foreseen and unforeseen?

Why is it a marina in hurricane country didn't have a plan that included
rebuilding after a hurricane wiped them out? When did it ever get to the
point where there was nothing but despair leading to a suicide? Where was
the financial cushion? Why is a newspaper article furthering the insanity
and acting like it was all somebody else's fault. Griping that government
help isn't timely or enough. Worse still is the question: "Why do people
reading that propaganda nod their heads in agreement?" It's a barometer
into the soul of a soulless liberal society.

For how many years did the Silvers own and operate the marina? 10? 15? 20?
Unless they just recently purchased the marina, why did they not set aside
a
percentage of earnings annually in a rebuilding kitty? Why did they
neglect
having a contingency plan? And, if they just recently purchased it why did
they wipe out most of their working capital so there was nothing left in
the
kitty for eventualities like hurricanes? Did they not have insurance of
some
sort? Where was their business plan? In hurricane country partial or total
destruction it's a matter of when, not if.

It sounds like they embraced the liberal lie that big brother would come
to
their rescue. How many times are people going to see this is rarely the
case
before they smarten up and become responsible for taking care of their
own?
Texan's, in particular, seem to like to brag about how they are so
ruggedly
independent and manly. While I've not seen the level of whining as was and
still is the case in New Orleans - an almost totally liberal bastion -
there
is still an embarrassing level of whining in the Galveston area where
folks
pride themselves on being personally responsible and independent.

As long as people believe government is their friend and helpmate they are
living a lie. You have but two real friends in this life - the Good Lord
and
His gifts to you. Any real man realizes this truth and acts accordingly.
For
help of a critical nature look first to the Lord, then yourself, your
friends and your church in that order. Government does not appear anywhere
on the list.

Wake up, people!

I remember during the planning of his business, posters asked him if
he had taken care of certain things they thought would be easy to
overlook. Joe smugly replied each time that he had crossed all the T's
and dotted all the i's. He clearly hadn't. Imagine his surprise when
he got to his destination and found out that he would not be allowed
to load the 10,000 pounds he had counted on transporting. There was a
4,000 pound limit, which even if he had made it back in one piece,
would have severely impacted the whole venture.

I hadn't heard that bit of news but it doesn't really surprise me. I've
always liked Joe but I'm disappointed in him because he refuses to listen to
reason. People try to help him and he takes it as an affront to his manhood
or something. People who have this type of personality rarely are able to
learn anything from their mistakes. They seem doomed to repeat the same
mistakes over and over again.

His smug rejection of sound advice, of course, may engender "I told you
so's" as a matter of course. Yet, he seems to think these "I told you so's"
are coming out of the blue with no rhyme or reason to them when it's his
attitude that gives rise to them. In some ways his personality seems to have
certain child-like qualities unbecoming of male adulthood. I wonder if he is
a product of a broken home and was raised without any strong father figure
in his life?

your concern. If I were seeking an opinion on how to move forward to

Also the expert at dodging the truth about your sailing ability and

If you ever worked your ticket you would know that is it a licence to

No such restriction that I know of, can you please point to where you
heard this?
It would not suprise me that you heard it, because Ive read a dozen
versions of what really happened too.

You just demonstrated my point, Joe. Instead of being rational you resorted
to your usual, ad hominem attack to avoid the issue. *Not the most adult of
things to do.

The fact that the topic's such a sore spot with you certainly should clue
you in that there's at least a kernel of truth in what I say. Moreover, no
matter what careless, self-serving assumptions you care to make about me,
they have little bearing on the fact that you really DO need to re-evaluate
yourself and your choices honestly if you wish to increase your chances of
success next time around.

I remember during the planning of his business, posters asked him if
he had taken care of certain things they thought would be easy to
overlook. Joe smugly replied each time that he had crossed all the T's
and dotted all the i's. *He clearly hadn't. *Imagine his surprise when
he got to his destination and found out that he would not be allowed
to load the 10,000 pounds he had counted on transporting. There was a
4,000 pound limit, which even if he had made it back in one piece,
would have severely impacted the whole venture.- Hide quoted text -

It was widely reported. Can you point to anything to verify that you
had 10,000 pounds of coffee aboard Red Cloud? ALL accounts that
mention the amount of coffee aboard say you had 4.000 pounds of
coffee, and that you didn't know you could only take 4,000 pounds
until your arrival down there.- Hide quoted text -

Don't believe everything you read in the press Mike. Like you, the
press was not privy to the facts.
There is no such limit as to the amount you can export, thats just
plain silly.

You can export any amount as long as the tariffs and taxes are paid.

Hey Gilligan hope all is well in Colorado,

Here there are over 300 boats abandoned on the lake .

http://www.galvnews.com/story.lasso?...84&-session=Th...

The EL Lago Marina was one of the worst wiped out, sadly Silvers wife
could not handle the pressure.

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?se...cal&id=6517696

I feel badly for the poor guy. But . . .

Why do people not anticipate this kind of thing and prepare for it? Why
do
people keep falling for the obviously false, liberal claptrap that a
knight
in shining, government armor is going to gallop out of the sunrise and
rescue them from every eventuality, foreseen and unforeseen?

Why is it a marina in hurricane country didn't have a plan that included
rebuilding after a hurricane wiped them out? When did it ever get to the
point where there was nothing but despair leading to a suicide? Where
was
the financial cushion? Why is a newspaper article furthering the
insanity
and acting like it was all somebody else's fault. Griping that
government
help isn't timely or enough. Worse still is the question: "Why do people
reading that propaganda nod their heads in agreement?" It's a barometer
into the soul of a soulless liberal society.

For how many years did the Silvers own and operate the marina? 10? 15?
20?
Unless they just recently purchased the marina, why did they not set
aside
a
percentage of earnings annually in a rebuilding kitty? Why did they
neglect
having a contingency plan? And, if they just recently purchased it why
did
they wipe out most of their working capital so there was nothing left in
the
kitty for eventualities like hurricanes? Did they not have insurance of
some
sort? Where was their business plan? In hurricane country partial or
total
destruction it's a matter of when, not if.

While I've not seen the level of whining as was
and
still is the case in New Orleans - an almost totally liberal bastion -
there
is still an embarrassing level of whining in the Galveston area where
folks
pride themselves on being personally responsible and independent.

As long as people believe government is their friend and helpmate they
are
living a lie. You have but two real friends in this life - the Good Lord
and
His gifts to you. Any real man realizes this truth and acts accordingly.
For
help of a critical nature look first to the Lord, then yourself, your
friends and your church in that order. Government does not appear
anywhere
on the list.

Wake up, people!
