Just called my friend in Holland using Skype to land line for the first time. We talked for a tad

over 15 minutes. Total cost was $0.42. Very clear - as clear as the telephone.

Skype on a land line???

Didn't know you could do that...

To a POTS phone? I bet the picture quality sucks ;-)

I suppose they could do voice only pretty easy.

What is POTS? The call was made to his home telephone number. He answers and talks through the
phone, as normal, and I talk through the computer microphone. No video. Sound was fantastic though,
clear as a bell.

Calling Netherlands land line is 2.3 cents/min. Cellphone is 8 cents/min. Cox charges $3.41 per
minute for land line or wireless calls, without a calling plan. With the plan the charge is 9
cents/minute. Skype is the way to go.

Plain Old Telephone Service

I get unlimited L/D as part of my phone package so I don't really pay
attention to who I call in the US. I don't know anyone to talk to
overseas.
Since I also bundle DSL and Dish to my phone bill I can say the phone
part is free, depending on how you want to rationalize the bundle
saving.
Considering how seldom I actually use the phone, a coin operated pay
phone might be a better option ;-)

I use Skype in-country only when the video adds something to the conversation, like with the kids.
It gets used frequently for calls to Holland. My daughter used it a lot to talk to her husband in
Afghanistan. The only way we had to call home from Vietnam was through MARS. What a pain in the butt
that was.
