That sounds like a drive I took from Detroit to Grand Rapids in a '68 VW
Beetle during a huge overnight ice storm. I was at the edge of traction
sliding the whole way but probably averaged 40-50 mph. The VW did well
compared to all the trucks and cars off the road.
That was courtesy of the rear engine weight and lighter front end, plus independent back suspension
My biggest problem
was the lack of defroster and freezing rain on the windshield that would
cause the wipers to stick. I cracked the windshield whacking it with my
hand to free the wipers... that and the gas pedal linkage freezing.
Too bad your bug wasn't equipped with a gasoline heater...
Old beetles had that carbon monoxide heater, right off the exhaust
manifold and no fan. Going down the road it worked OK if you were
driving a ways.
How well do I remember. I was raised in a '64 bug...
Our first car in Germany as an underpaid 2LT was a 1959 Karmann Ghia - my cheap Porsche. Fun car for
whipping around German roads, although not a speed demon on the autobahn. Whenever I had to pick up
a soldier who had a little too much to drink, got wild, and was in a German jail, I'd make him ride
in the back seat of that KG - all the way back to the barracks. Word got around. My back seat was
not a place to ride!
