You don't get much more deliberate than that crash at home
plate. The
whole intent is to hit the catcher hard enough to make him drop
the
ball. The catcher does wear protective gear but it really just
protects him from a pitched ball, not a 250 pound, roided up

ball or get hurt... every single one. Every time a guy blocks on

line, he tries to shove a thumb in an eye, or an elbow to the
kidney,
twist a leg while in the pile, etc..... Your pads don't help
much when
you are in a pile and someone grabs your leg and tries to twist
it off
while getting up... Granted, in baseball there is some contact,
what,
three times a game? In football there are probably 40 hits, each
and
every play, designed to hurt the other guy and put him out of the
game...
I honestly don't believe that. Some fraction of the players
intend to
hurt someone, but I believe
most players intend to do their job - protect the quarterback, rush
the quarterback, run the ball,
tackle the ball carrier, catch the ball, stop the catch, etc., etc.

Agreed. Football is a rough sport but I think the majority of the
players have a certain degree of respect for each other and are
not out
to *intentionally* cause injuries. It could just as easily
happen to
them. (Paybacks are a bitch).
There are a few who are out to maim but they are in the minority.

Well, it's a comment on the way he summarily dismisses almost anything I

We were talking about one specific thing, the inflicting of
intentional injuries in football, not
'almost anything you say'. You said, "In football there are probably

game..." To get 40 hits per play,
given there are 22 people on the field, and one hit takes two or more
people, would mean that each
player hits another three or four times per play, *and* each hit is
designed to *hurt* the other guy
- not block, not catch, not pass block, not throw, not tackle, but
*hurt*.

We were talking about one specific thing... how many intentional hits
football players get compared to soccer, lacross, and basketball...
It would be interesting to compare the serious injury rate per 100
professional and college players in sports such as football, soccer,
basketball, baseball. By serious injuries, I would include concussions
and other serious head/brain injuries, fractures, internal organ damage,
et cetera. I would be very surprised to learn that the rate of *serious*
injuries in football wasn't at least twice as high as the rate of the
next sport.
I doubt if stats are kept on the deliberate infliction of *serious*
injuries on other players. I would expect that the deliberately
inflicted *serious* injuries in football lead the list in a big way.
