Police said an Iowa man was arrested after his concealed weapon
accidentally fired while he was shopping at Wal-Mart.
Officers said Christopher William Strube, of Centerville, was shopping
Sunday afternoon when the .45-caliber handgun fired from his pants
pocket.
Investigators said the 50-year-old Strube told them a bottle he was
carrying struck the weapon and caused it to fire one round.
Police said Strube told them he paid for his items and left the store.
Store employees and other shoppers reported the gunshot, and police
said they smelled gunpowder and found a bullet hole in a basket and
several cans of beans.
They also found a .45-caliber bullet in one of the cans of beans.
Strube, who has a valid concealed carry permit, was arrested the
following morning and charged with discharging a weapon within city
limits.
Evolution in action.
It's one of the reasons that on the rare occasions that I carry, I don't
do so with a round in the chamber, despite what all the gung-ho gun
people say. When I carry, the magazine is loaded and installed but the
chamber is clear and the safety is on. It only takes a second to flip
the safety off rack it if you practice.
It's also one of the reasons I don't "carry" with a revolver.
I don't carry much anymore anyway. When I had the guitar shop and was
by myself there I did because I often had quite a bit of cash on me and
people knew it.
The ones that caught my attention were strangers who would park outside
the shop and one would stay in the car with it running while one or more
came in. Never had any problems though.
