For those who need it, Verizon tosses in a free wifi hot spot capability
with its "share" agreements. Another name for it is tethering. With it,
you can "wi fi" connect a device that needs web or email access where wi
fi access is not available. The phone connects over the data network and
creates a wi fi log in capability for the other device. There's no
monthly charge for the hot spot app, but, of course, it does dip into
your data allotment.
Some other carriers offer this, and some of them charge for the hot spot app.
It requires some minimum cost data plan. The minimum is higher than basic
data plans. I get 4 gigs for the price of 2 gigs and my plan does not
qualify.
I have a "share" plan. When I looked at the specifics, the data part was
the same price per block of GB, no matter how you bought it. I'm paying
for a number of cell lines, so I didn't spend time looking for a plan for
a single device. I'm not even sure what a "basic data plan" is...how much data is that?
When I got my phone 2 years ago, they gave twice the gigs for the same
price. I think when I tried to hot spot, said you had to have a minimum
$25 data plan.
On its site, Verizon is selling data plans as follows:
500 mb $40
1 GB 50
2 GB 60
4 GB 70
and so forth.
My plan is 1400 minutes and 4 gig of data, one phone data, two phones
shared minutes for $130.
Unlimited text and data, 1200 minutes talk time, $43 per month... It was
38 but when I upgraded phones, I had to upgrade my plan...
But Virgin here has crappy coverage on the coast. Just like att. Make
calls from Verizon phone where no ATT coverage. We had ATT for years, 2
phones, 1500 minutes and rollover minutes about $65, but got tired of bad
coverage.
Not just on the coast, virgin has crappy coverage just about everywhere
except in a city.
